Actually Equation, we are discussing the South China Sea, and NO that does NOT mean the whole Sea belongs to China!

So no need for you to launch into one of your little put down "snits"! Many of SDF's senior members are men of Faith! why would you take offense at their many kindnesses toward you brother, since those kindnesses very likely stem from their Faith??

China's underlying logic in the SCS shares similarities with the Monroe Doctrine in the Caribbean. It is not likely that China would claim the whole sea as 100% sovereign waters. I think China is trying to make a grand bargain in the region that results in it being the preeminent power of the region and other nations would be compelled to join a China lead regional order (Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Philippines, Singapore). There would be free navigation and exploration of resources by other nations, just under a different framework. Ultimately China views the current framework an architecture that it didn't participate in creating thus would like to contribute its "ideas".

Give a listen to Michael Pillsbury's videos or read his books, it provides some good insight into the overall picture. I've bought his book "The Hundred Year Marathon". He outlines the perspectives of some in China's government quite well as he speaks Mandarin, reads Chinese and had experience dealing with Chinese officials and military officers. I encourage more young people to learn Mandarin and be able to read Chinese as the language barrier is a big disadvantage for the West in understanding China.

Very True Bub,, theres an awful lot about China that I'm rather certain many of us do miss, and knowing and understanding the language, and translating accurately whats been said and its implications do contribute to greater understanding... that's why I keep coming here to learn and really understand the nuances that other miss.

Personal identity politics almost always makes hard to find and appreciate nuances in complex international issues.

The UK has apparently sent a Type 23 frigate to the SCS and it is currently docking at Singapore. Pictures courtesy of Sina Military Weibo Account.

First the French and then this. If the French and the British were being half serious they wouldn't have sent these ships.

I would call this a stunt at best, and a pretty hilarious one at that. This isn't a show of force, it's more of a show of how little they're willing to commit on the SCS issue.

About a week ago Australia's Sydney Morning Herald published an article titled "Great Powers stepping up on China".

I'm pretty sure the author was being serious when he/she used the term "great powers", but putting that title against these ships it really sounds more like sarcasm than anything else.
