Though framed as a civilian research project, it has clear military implications, both in improving China’s undersea warfare capabilities in deep waters and (possibly) tracking U.S. undersea assets operating in the area.

The PRC team apparently maintains a “long-term comprehensive observation buoy” in waters above the Trench. It recently attached six acoustic sensors to the buoy.

"(Reporter Zheng Ya-nan) Recently, China's first set of water meters deep sound acoustic observation submarine success in the Mariana Trench Challenger abyss successfully, the domestic scientific research team for the first time to hear the deepest voice from the ocean.
Mariana Trench is the deepest trenches currently known in the world. It is located on the Pacific Ocean floor near the Mariana Islands in the northeast of the Philippines, with the depth of about 11,000 meters, making it the "fourth most polar" earth. The Mariana Trench is the best natural window to explore the origins of ocean dynamics, material and energy transport, biogeochemical processes, crust-mantle structures and species under extreme conditions and is the best place to study deep sea science and technology.
The experiment is led by the Northwestern Polytechnical University Navigation College Ocean Observation and Detection Technology Research Team. In cooperation with Ocean University of China, Institute of Acoustics, Chinese Academy of Sciences and the First Institute of Oceanography of the State Oceanic Administration, this experiment focuses on the marine environment noise distribution in the Mariana Trench, Trench acoustic propagation characteristics and other major scientific issues. After nearly a year of preparation, the design, research and development, testing and acoustic design of the Mariana Trench acoustic experiment program have been completed.
In order to understand the issue of "how sound propagates in such a deep trench," our scientists conducted this acoustic experiment in the Mariana Trench. Lulian Port, an associate researcher at the Institute of First Marine Institute of the State Oceanic Administration, said in an interview with reporters: This is the first time that China conducted acoustic experiments in the Mariana Trench, but only one example of the related experiment carried out abroad.
In recent years, Chinese scientists, as well as scientists from the United States and Japan, have conducted a series of studies on key scientific issues such as biological diversity of troughs, systematic origin and evolution mechanism, archaeal channels, and virus characteristics and functions. However, Related observations and research on the characteristics of very few.
In the acoustics experiment, the experimental team successfully deployed and recovered the underwater acoustic observation potential of 10,000 meters in the Challenger Abyss of Mariana Trench, and realized the full water depth observation of the acoustic characteristics of the trench. The acoustic sensor coverage depth ranged from 200 to 9300 Meter. The experimental team also conducted a fixed-point sound source launch in the Mariana Trench, obtained the acoustic propagation characteristics of the Mariana Trench, and laid the foundation for revealing the sound propagation in the deepest waters of the world.
The experimental team mounted six self-contained acoustic sensors on the long-term comprehensive observation submarine Mariana Trench, scheduled to be recycled by November 2018. At the appointed time, the marine environment noise observation data of the Mariana Trench will be obtained throughout the year, which will be the first-hand information for listening to the deepest sounds in the ocean and exploring the mysteries of unknown acoustics found in the deepest parts of the oceans."

Removal of book on S.China Sea shows Vietnam’s diffidence: expert

China's legitimate sovereignty over the South China Sea will not change despite a move by the Vietnamese government to ban a book about the area's history, and the move shows Vietnam's lack of confidence, said the Chinese book's editor.

Vietnam's publishing department has issued a decision to withdraw and destroy a book which it regards as containing "misleading information" about the South China Sea, Vietnam's Tuoi Tre Newspaper reported Tuesday.

The department also bans Vietnamese publishers from selling the Chinese authored book published in Vietnamese, and libraries from holding it, as it blames the book for "distorting historical truth" by saying the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) had sovereignty over the territory of Nansha islands in the South China Sea when it was ruled by the Qianlong and Kangxi emperors.

Ge Jianxiong, a distinguished professor at Fudan University, also editor and one of the book's authors, told the Global Times that islands of the South China Sea belonging to China is a historical fact and the Vietnam government banning one book cannot change this.

"Vietnam's move reflects their lack of confidence," said Ge.

"If Vietnam really wants to prove their sovereignty over the South China Sea islands, they should also provide historical evidence, instead of destroying our book, which will actually only help in the sale of the book and let more people learn of the truth," said Ge.

He also said that the Vietnam government is becoming increasingly isolated and inward-looking on communication related to the islands in the South China Sea.

In August, China and most Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) members arrived at a consensus and committed to easing disputes in the South China Sea. However, Vietnam tried to force its agenda by inserting "construction on islands and reefs" into the draft communiqué, Xinhua quoted a source close to the meeting as saying.

Shanghai-based online news portal Thepaper.cn reported on Monday that Lieutenant General Xu Anxiang, 61, formerly head of the air force’s Southern Theatre Command, had been transferred to become one of the 10 members of the standing committee of the air force’s Communist Party committee.

The standing committee is the inner sanctum of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force and its other members generally have national responsibilities, ranging from overall command to logistics and armaments. Xu is the only member with specialist regional expertise.

The Southern Theatre Command is one of China’s five military regions and is charged with defending China’s interests in the South China Sea.

Military analyst Zeng Zhiping, from the Nanchang Institute of Technology in Jiangxi province, said the air force needed someone in its top ranks with specialist understanding and experience of the South China Sea.

“Xu’s transfer reflects a significant change in terms of military strategy,” Zeng said, without elaborating.

A Beijing-based source close to the military said Xu had been appointed a deputy commander.

Former Air Force Command College dean Major General Yu Qingjiang was also named as a new member of the standing committee. Yu, an experienced fighter jet pilot, becomes the chief of staff of the PLA’s Air Force, according to the source.

If precedent was any guide, Xu would have already been in his new position before the transfer was made public, Zeng said.

Xu was widely seen as destined for higher office when he became one of the 205 full members of the party’s elite Central Committee at its

in late October.

On its official microblog, the air force said Xu had been involved in routine flight training and patrols over the South China Sea and devoted himself to preparing for and winning a war.

“Conducting training and patrols in distant waters is key in preparing for potential military conflicts,” Xu was quoted as saying. “It is the only way for China to build up a strong air force.”

China says it has sovereignty over a vast area of the South China Sea but faces competing claims from several other states, including the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Words spreading China will take military actions against Taiwan if US warships docked at Taiwan.

For starter, China will wrestle Pratas island away from Taiwan . the island strategically situates between SCS and Western Pacific ocean.

I'm skeptical China would initiate military action on Pratas solely because of a US ship in Taiwan. It would be an extreme over-reaction that would be out of step with a cautious approach so far.

That doesn't mean Pratas isn't on the radar. It's *far* to perfectly located to ignore. Indeed, I'd go so far as to say that the long-term aim of opening a way through the first island chain and securing control of the SCC sea lanes is effectively impossible without controlling that atoll.

However, in and of itself, Pratas doesn't achieve this full aim, and I imagine is impossible to achieve until the PLAN can deploy at least two carrier strike groups simultaneously. Strategic access to the pacific for PLAN necessitates a base to the east of the chain, which I suspect in any long term strategy would be on Orchid Island, off the south-eastern coast of Taiwan. That is a more complex target than Pratas itself and would likely need to be tackled either diplomatically (impossible if China has pissed of Taiwan by taking Pratas by force) or via a surprise sudden strike on both Pratas and the Orchid group simultaneously, which demands two strike groups. Anything else would cause the Taiwanese to entrench additional forces there, effectively making it a fortress liberally sprinkled with civilians in the middle of the ocean, and no one wants the job of tackling that in the glare of the world's media.

"Since US warships constitute national territory under international law, it is like stationing the F-35s on a mobile piece of US territory.
"Unlike a US base on foreign territory, one can launch planes from a US warship without informing, much less gaining permission from another country," said Schuster, now a Hawaii Pacific University professor.

That really got me interested. So I googled.

"The Navy refers to its newest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, as "4.5 acres of sovereign U.S. territory." The $12.9 billion warship — the first of the Navy's next generation of aircraft carriers — is in the final stages of construction after cost overruns and a delay of more than one year."

Again, same line of thought.

So this is what I don't get, if a piece of purely man-made aircraft carrier can be considered as a soverign territory, what the heck is US harping about China constructing man-made islands in the SCS is illegal and not consider as soverign territory??

Isn't this just american hyprocrisy?
