I'm not sure as to its authenticity, but it was said that after the last riot in which a few Chinese nationals were killed, China rushed through and passed a new law allowing the Chinese military to protect Chinese nationals in foreign lands.
Even if true, I think it would have largely been symbolic and more a warning rather than China looking for an excuse to start a fight.
I think at most, if things really got out of hand, the PLA would only go as far as to mount extraction and/or search and rescue operations to get its nationals or at least some key VIPs out of harms way unilaterally without explicit approval of the host nation.
However, the host nation would likely be informed and left in no doubt as to the nature of the missions and the consequences of any attempt to intercept or engage them.
That would be totally in line with international norms, and tbh, if things got so out of hand as to require the PLA to take such drastic action, many other foreign nations would be out mounting similar ops to get their own people out.
