Not to go OT, but there are Han nationalists? What do they want?
Look up the Imperial Han 皇汉 folks. It is still a marginalised radical movement only somewhat more influential than those calling for Shanghai independence, but it is growing.
The more common Han nationalists are more subtle, less militant, and are generally part of both PRC patriots and ironically overseas dissidents. In fact, most PRC patriots have some levels of subtle Han nationalism. Han nationalists’ shared characters include:
1. opposition to Hu Yaobang’s 量少一宽 ethnic minority privilege policy (which lasted until Xi came to power),
2. opposition to affirmative actions for minorities,
3. putting the interests of the imagined Han Chinese national community/gemeinschaft above the CPC,
4. believes CPC should serve and prioritise Han people’s interests,
5. opposition to feminism, especially anti-birth feminism and Chinese women worshipping/marrying foreign men
6. Believing that education system should teach traditional Confucian values and the glories of China’s imperial past
7. Believing that ethnic minorities should assimilate to the majority Han culture
8. Believing in zero-sum structural realism of international politics, especially in terms of racial, ethnic, and cultural wars
9. Praises the CPC regarding national achievements (nukes, military power, economic growth, tech advancement) but criticises it due to the Party’s German/Marxist and Soviet/Leninist roots
Many overseas anti-CPC dissidents are also Han nationalists due to their support for the KMT’s legacies, opposition to Marxist-Leninism-Maoism, and believes that the CPC is a running dog of the Russians; thus, illegitimate.
AND apology for being off topic here. Maybe whoever here has a political science degree should start a thread on various Chinese historical and contemporary national identities.
