From what I know: Corruption has been big, and so has the counterfeiting.

But I'd like to note University education. People say China's colleges are at this pt a mess that even gangsters can attend. Given that, it sounds like China's students have more quantity, then quality.............. (and America is freaking out about all this...)

Why did China fall behind the western world? Because there were no more significant enemies. No one could imagine China being overtaken or even hurt by a foreign power, so why bother developing the military-industrial infrastructure to fight? When a government has no credible rivals or enemies, there is no need for truth, science, or more advanced weapons- these are only liabilities that could potentially damage the stability of the regime. It's an oversimplification, I know, but think towards Orwell's 1984- unconquerable, undefeatable states stagnate because they can afford to do so and still perpetuate themselves. The West, on the other hand, was in constant turmoil and had constant need to improve its weapons, technology, and military thinking, and when the young, vibrant West finally met old, established China, China could not change quickly enough to meet this new challenge.

well, if we are getting historical about why China is lagging behind the western world, we might as well look deeper. I think the mongol invasion and the destruction of Song Dynasty did more harm to China's development than anything else. The mongol conquerer destroyed most of the advance agriculture and handcraft which at the time was the most advanced in the world. They also didnt understand commerce or finance, destroying the very developed commerical and trade systems under the Song. China could well had its industrial revolution a thousand years ago, just imagine what that would be like.

The Ming Dynasty was just as much of a disaster, it was too paranoid and too conservative, it actually destroyed and restricted knowlege of metallurgy and gunpowder to keep the popluation from rebellion, causing china's military technology to deteriote to a point where the Koreans were able to produce better swords and firearm.

Qing dynasty has its own problem, it continued with the Ming's policy and only half heartly put in reforms when its too late.

Hi, actually we are now closing on one of the most legendary topics of SDFs history (why isent china dominator of the western world?)(...or in my point of view...) anyway, so to add thats topics offerings to this thread, here is a bit summary that we managed to come together....to simple, the reason why China falled behind the western world was simply due geographics, nothing more. Chinese soil was favorable for devolping societyes, similar manner than the fruitile half-moon in the middle east. But its geogrhapy was also favorable to the early progression of centralised govrment as it allowed no natural bastions for rivaling hegemonyes. Unfortuanetly this leads always for stagnation and corruption of the centralised government as there isent any imidiate threads. Also it stalls and slowes the innovatity in china and thus allowed china to stop producing innovative new things that in other parts of the world led to the new world domination of the western world...
Europe, the birth place of western power in otherhand offered totally opposite conditions that improved innovativety and thus helped Europe to rise to the power and overwhelm the chinese.

So you got quite close there, redaziancommieDXP....

For those who like to know more, please study Jared Diamonds books about civilications devolpments (i cant grasb its english name but i will get back to it). In his book, he explains this theory lot better...
