Good article, though I expect nothing less from Wade Shepard. I've been following him since his humble beginnings as a blogger for vagabond journey, and the guy writes some excellent stuff. I remember when he visited the first "ghost city" in China and became fascinated by it, and I was impressed by how much time he spent over the years to dig so deep into the phenomenon and unearth the story that remains untold in the MSM. He's really taken to the New Silk Road lately, and his articles on it are some of the best.
Same on following Wade Shepard, who was on OBOR/BRI earlier than most Westerners. I make a point of viewing his writings and think tank appearances on happenings in China, including ghost cities, travel journals, and BRI topics.Good article, though I expect nothing less from Wade Shepard. Critical article from the SCMP on Silk Road railway services.
PUFFING ACROSS THE ‘ONE BELT, ONE ROAD’ RAIL ROUTE TO NOWHERE
But it's contradicted by the situation which shows a continuing increase in China-Europe railway services due to increasing demand.
Chengdu to run 1,000 cargo trains to Europe in 2017
German rail giant ramps up 'Silk Road' freight line to China
Wade Shepherd seems to base his believes on evidence, and will change his positions when facts disprove his previously held believes. He's also on top of the fast pace changes BRI by being there and logging the changes. He's refreshing in that he addresses his audience without pro or anti agendas, and report events as he sees them, good or bad.I believe he change his mind too since then and revisited those "Ghost town" that is now well populated and alive . but western press never reported it
He did revisited Khorgos too and now is full of people
He is quite out. Transport to China is much cheaper than in the other direction, It is better to get some money by filling a container than to have to pay for sending an empty container back. The writer puts up a strong case for his POV based on current high cost of $1500 to ship a container to rail at a cost of $2500. Im wondering if the current higher shipping costs are only temporary as last year spot shipping prices from Europe to China were in the low hundreds.
