This white contingent is doing real work. As far as I can remember, the pink contingent were specially recruited from all segments of the population just to march in the parade, and they have long since been disbanded.

The pink contingent is a militia. And yes, they were specially recruited.

However, the militia is meant to be called up during times of emergency. Although I wonder what that particular contingent would be able to help out in?

Nonetheless, I thought it was a highly symbolic nod to the female populace within China that they are not forgotten.

Its a hospital ship, meaning those are probably nurses.

Gender equality is not something the PLAN (or any navy for that matter) is renowned for.

Talks about the hospital ship getting the first replenishment in deep sea at where Malacca straits and Indian Ocean meet. It was done by No 887 Weishanhu of the SSF. Looks like this ship has been out a lot and they really need more replenishment ships.

当地时间早上6时许，浩瀚的大洋上，刚刚为我第五批护航编队进行补给的“鄱阳湖”号综合补给舰，准时抵达补给海域，与“和平方舟”号医院船会合后保持同向同速航行，展开补给部署。

“发射引缆！”随着指挥员一声令下，“鄱阳湖”号综合补给舰引缆发射号手将引缆发射至医院船左舷。紧接着，在引缆的牵引下，输油管一次性快速对接成功。 “收紧钢索！”相距40多米的“鄱阳湖”号补给舰与“和平方舟”号医院船之间，一道索桥凌空架起。记者在现场看到，原本干瘪的输油软管迅速鼓胀起来。经过两个小时的补给，“鄱阳湖”号综合补给舰成功为“和平方舟”号医院船补给了计划数量的燃油。

这次补给采用的是航行中横向补给的方式。补给结束后，“和平方舟”号医院船将继续向亚丁湾海域进发。按计划，在抵达任务海区前医院船还将进行数次补给。

What do they mean by this? . THeir P.R. needs to get their facts right.
Us Navy Vietnam war era Hospital ship "Sanctury" displaces 15,226 tons

and currently the USNS "Mercy" T-AH-19 displaces 69,360 tons and USNS "Comfort"T-AH-20 displaces 69,360 tons

True..aside from Nimitz class CVNs the Mercy & Comfort are the largest ships in the USN or USNS.

But the article stated capacity not displacement..

Here's the stats on the ship.

Displacement: approximately 20,000-23,000 tons
Length: 170 metres
Beam: approximately 25 metres
Propulsion: twin shaft diesel turbines
Complement: approximately 200 crew, 600 medical team
Aircraft carried: probably Z-8 or Ka-28
Aviation facilities: hanger

those ships that you mentioned were not built as dedicate hospital ships. they were converted either from oil tankers or other navy vessels. this chinese peace ark hospital ship is the first ever dedicated, purpose built hospital ship above 10000 tons so in that sense they are not wrong

China themselves have a 30000 ton hospital ship (ship 865) converted from a container ship and im sure their PR are fully aware of it. hence i still believe that when they say first they mean first dedicated and not converted hospital ship
