Royal Australian Navy joins China in live fire exercise
Friday, 24 September 2010 12:30

The Royal Australian Navy Frigate HMAS Warramunga has successfully completed the first live firing exercise of its kind with the Chinese Navy off the coast of China.

HMAS Warramunga’s Commanding Officer, Commander Bruce Legge said the shoot at set targets provided his crew with the opportunity to hone their skills with a regional partner.

“We have recently come from another major regional exercise Kakadu off the northern Australian coast,” Commander Legge said.

“While we are used to operating with other nations from our region, this is the first time we have undertaken such a complex exercise with the Chinese and we are looking forward to building on this experience.”

HMAS Warramunga will continue exercising with the PLA-N over the next week. The evolutions will include joint helicopter operations, search and rescue drills and personnel exchanges.

The Chief of Navy Vice Admiral Russ Crane AO, CSM, RAN says this is one of the most complex exercises the RAN has ever held with the People’s Liberation Army (Navy).

“The RAN welcomes the constructive contributions that the People’s Liberation Army (Navy) has made to regional security to date,” said Vice Admiral Crane.

Australia is committed to developing strong and positive defence relations with China that help contribute to regional stability.”

This is diplomacy at its best,” Commander Legge said.

”There is nothing more effective than working closely together in a military exercise to build trust and friendship between Navies and nations.”

Don't think there have been too many PLAN-RAN exercises. But this is a positive development as the PLAN is increasingly involved in exercises, ports and exchanges with other navies (such the recent port call by PLAN ships in Sydney).

This might not proof to be too surprising, given the fact that more and more chinese investment are done in Australia, especially for the raw material and mining processes.

Thus it might be in the interest of the Chinese to allocated more military presence as well as port calls to 'more friendly' navies of the region.

i doubt china can be too close with the aussies, but if it's possible to have a warm relationship with the aussies, this would make australia one of the first western nations to be "closer" with china

Actually Germany and France are not too alien to the Chinese too. Seeing that they have regular trade in equipment, machineries and stuff like that. I the west are too hostile to the chinese too.

Australia is a big trade partner with China especially for their minerals and other raw materials...

It is a sound strategy for China to develope and maintain good relations with as many countries as possible, and joint exercises are a good goal as a demonstration of a relatively high level of mutual trust.

Re: Chinese Secondary Artillery mobilsed to Tibet

Following the first report three weeks ago, China's Science&Technology Daily reported today that the Chinese Secondary Artillery brigade mobilsed to Tibet in May had been moving twice again, out of Tibet to north, fired live missile there, then returned to its inland base.

At Africa Defence Expo, China shows its might and ambition

E T B Sivapriyan Cape Town, Sep 28 (PTI) Reflecting its growing military might and interest in resource-rich Africa, China showcased its entire range of warships, missile systems and other military equipment at a major defence exhibition here becoming the biggest exhibitor of the biennial expo. All roads at the Ysterplaat Air Force Base in this scenic South African city led to the Chinese Pavilion where 10 companies from the Asian giant had displayed an entire range of military equipment under a single banner 'China Defence' at the Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD) 2010 exhibition. The huge Chinese presence at this year's AAD, billed as Africa's biggest Defence and Air Expo, is significant as China had only a couple of stalls in the AAD 2008 and observers feel it was its own way of telling the world that it has arrived in the continent, which has rich oil and mineral resources. Chinese troops serve in the UN missions across the continent and Beijing is sponsoring building programmes that include better roads, infrastructure and schools and the military officials are offering training and support to many African nations. This is the first time that China has booked a national pavilion at the expo and showcased a whole range of defence equipment on par with the US, the organisers said. The US did not have a national pavilion at the expo, though noted companies like Lockheed Martin and Boeing had stalls and their planes participated in the Air Show. China sources more than half of its oil supplies from African countries and its show of strength in the Defence Expo is seen as an attempt to expand military ties with the African countries in exchange of getting access to their minerals and oil reserves. The AAD 2010 was much bigger than its 2008 edition and some 300 exhibitors from 31 countries participated in this year's expo which drew an estimated 16,000 trade visitors. It also coincided with the India, Brazil, South Africa joint maritime exercises (IBSAMAR) off the South African coast. Eleven warships from the three emerging economies that form IBSA were docked at the Cape Town port till yesterday as part of the exercises and visitors to the AAD also had a chance to take a look at these warships. Covering an area of over 1,200 square metres in the Air Force Base, Chinese companies like China National Precision Machinery Import and Export Corporation, China Ship Building Trading Company (CSTC), China National Aero-Technology Import and Export Corporation and State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry of National Defence. More than 1,000 Chinese-made fighter aircraft are now flying in more than 30 countries across the world.

Please, Log in or Register to view URLs content!

The latest Pentagon report on Chinese military forces recently triggered sensational headlines in the Indian news media that China had deployed new nuclear missiles close to the Indian border.

The news reports got it wrong, but new commercial satellite images reveal that launch units for the new DF-21C missile have deployed to central-western China.

What do you think about this irresponsible remark from Russian navy chief?

Russian navy chief warns of China's race for Arctic

Russia will increase naval patrols in the Arctic Ocean to defend its interests against nations such as China seeking a share of the area's mineral wealth, the navy commander was quoted as saying on Monday.

Arctic nations such as Canada, Russia, Norway, the United States and Denmark are trying to file territorial claims over the oil, gas and precious metal reserves under the Arctic sea bed that may become accessible as the ice cap shrinks.

But in a rare public warning about China from Russia's top military brass, Admiral Vladimir Vysotsky warned that China had already joined the scramble for a piece of "the Arctic pie".

"We are observing the penetration of a host of states which ... are advancing their interests very intensively, in every possible way, in particular China," Admiral Vysotsky was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies.

Russia would "not give up a single inch" in the Arctic.

"The ships of the Northern and Pacific fleets are continuing to increase their military presence in the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation with new navy ships," he was quoted as saying by state RIA news agency.

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin tried to dampen fears of China last month, saying Russia had nothing to fear from its eastern neighbour, though many senior officials in Moscow are privately concerned about China's growing global clout.

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute said in a research note in March that China was positioning itself to gain from the prospect of new Arctic shipping routes and the region's untapped resources as the ice cap melts.

China, the world's fastest growing major economy, has sought to secure long-term oil and gas supplies from Russia, the world's biggest energy producer, which has a population of 142 million compared to China's 1.3 billion.

By international law, Canada, Russia, Norway, the United States and Denmark have a 370km (200 nautical mile) economic zone north of their Arctic borders.

Russia wants more, claiming the Arctic Ocean sea floor is an extension of its continental shelf, though Putin urged Arctic nations last month to cut a deal on how to explore the region's mineral resources.

Russia believes its entire Arctic territory holds twice as much oil and gas reserves as Saudi Arabia, the world's second biggest oil producer after Russia.

Another report has appeared on the modernisation of the PLAN but it is nothing more than the reworking of a recent analysis from 'The Diplomat' with maybe a couple of added optimistic projections. If you choose not to read it,i don't think you will miss out on anything. In fact many people on this forum could have written it.

Bold claims include :- Estimates indicate that the navy will add 10 modern Song- and Yuan-class diesel subs by 2015 and an additional 10 by 2020. If such projections are accurate, the fleet will be 78 boats strong.

:- citing GlobalSecurity.org projecting that 12 Jiangkais will be in service by this year, 22 by 2015. ( Although it is not a direct claim by the author, the question is put to the readers for a vote at the end of the article ) I'm one of the 3 who voted it down.Constructing 12 by the end of the year is one thing, having them in service is quite another.
