China News Thread

Firstly, China doesn't overemphasize defence spending. Compare with other nations, China defence spending is just mediocre. Secondly, China pursues of self-reliance has been forced and it is not by choice. Access to the world supplies chain and making the best products is ideal but not attainable anymore due to the threat of a total ban.

Some fair arguments but China is far from that yet for reasons you already mentioned.

His speech hasn't been censored or blocked. Basically means at least some of his thoughts are supported by the party. Xi wants to leave room for compromise in certain areas. Maybe moderates/reformists are gaining more voice in the party these days.

SCMP spins things for a Western audience since it's mainly a English-language newspaper. If it sounds iffy or wrong, it probably because it's slightly manipulated to fit a narrative that Western audience wants to hear. I'd say like 80% of time it's like that, and 20% of time it's more fair and accurate representation. Still better than pure Western crap like Bberg, NYT, or WaPo.

Just a couple years ago, many people thought China would cave and accept Trump's term. Many so call Chinese advisers speak in favor of accepting the unequal treaty so China can continue to bide its time. All media including SCMP was singing the tune that China would bow to the US again. It just took a No from Xi and the standing committee to turn thing 180 degree around. All these experts shut up and new agreement was negotiated.

I think people don't need to overthink so called experts or advisors' opinion. In the end of the day, they only represent some interest groups' thinking. They don't call the shot and only give advise. Chinese government allows them to speak and have internal debate so the government could make a more balance decision.

It hurt to see the child crying.
The punishment was soft AF that dude needs a severe beat down himself. He needed the same treatment he meted out to his wife in order for him to truly feel the pain and humiliation his wife experienced.

That man is a piece of excrement. The party ought to have done more than placing that pathetic loser to what essentially is an administrative leave.

All of these speeches are published for a reason. Foreign Policy mag just published an article about possibility of U.S.-China détente. Who knows what’s really happening behind the scene.

But if one side wants to turn down the heat, why not play along. If overtures are not well received, both sides always have the option to return to hardline ways

For China, I don't think it has any high expectation from the Biden administration. China is willing to deescalate. However, it is really not up to China anymore. Biden administration is cornered by the previous administration, media and American public to act tough against China. Biden has blown the chance to tone down the rhetoric by double down on Trump's policies.

China has already made clear that any addition talks are pretty much pointless. Biden basically would enact more anti-China policies after each engagement between the US and China. It is better off for China to postpone the meeting than having more meeting. I think China has given up hope that further talk would produce positive outcome. Talk and engagement would be aimed to prevent further deterioration of relationship.

Indeed. Biden finally had his meeting with Xi (after begging for it for many months), and some days later the US is keep going with its provocations.

No point to even take the US seriously anymore
