Xiang Xuan, the nephew of Marshal He Long and youngest soldier who participated in the Long March (1934-36) of Red Army, died at 97 on Friday, the Paper.cn reported on Sunday.
He died of illness in Chengdu city of Sichuan province, said the report, citing Xiang's relatives and friends and local authority in his hometown of Sangzhi county in Hunan province.
Xiang was born in 1926 in Sangzhi and his mother was the younger sister of Marshal He, one of leading generals who led China's revolutionary Red Army and the People's Liberation Army, according to a feature coverage released last year by PLA Daily, the official newspaper run by the military.
When he was two, his mother He Mangu, who led local people to attend revolutionary activities, was killed after being arrested by the enemy. During the following years, he was raised by his aunt He Ying, another local revolutionary leader, until 1933 when his aunt was attacked and injured by enemy troops.
Before being arrested, He Ying asked the 7-year-old boy to look for his uncle He Long, a then Red Army leader, leaving him a handgun, two gold rings and five silver dollars, according to the report.
When the boy met the Red Army and his uncle, he stayed and become a soldier of the Army. In 1935, under the leadership of He Long, some 17,000 soldiers began their journey of the Long March from Sangzhi county. The then nine year old Xiang became the youngest soldier of the troops.
The Long March (1934-36) was a massive military operation undertaken by the Red Army, forerunner of the PLA, to retreat from its revolutionary bases in South China and escape the encirclement and pursuit of the Kuomintang army, It involved around 86,000 troops.
In 1938, the 14-year-old Xiang went to the front line and participated in a couple of battles in Central China's Shaanxi province.
"Don't be afraid to die in battle. The more afraid you are, the more likely you will die," he said, quoted by the PLA Daily.
During the Battle of Libei in Dali, Shaanxi province, in 1948, Xiang, then an engineering company commander of the Northwest Field Army, used modified soil to blast pillboxes belonging to the enemy. However, he got seriously wounded, with his right eye becoming almost blind and becoming pierced by shrapnel in his body, according to the feature.

Not sure whether this is enough to fix things, I figure a full reset and rebuild from the ground up might be needed.

Another important figure of Chinese soccer has been brought down, according to a statement from the Hubei Provincial Commission for Discipline Inspection on Tuesday night, as the anti-corruption storm of Chinese soccer keeps deepening.

who was put under investigation on suspicion of serious violations of law and discipline. On the same day, China Fortune Land Development Co said that its co-president Meng Jing had been detained. Meng is a former board member of the Hebei Football Club.

On Wednesday, the CFA issued a statement saying that it firmly supports the disciplinary and supervisory authorities to conduct an investigation into Chen Xuyuan.

The investigation of Chen fully reflects the determination and zero tolerance in the fight against corruption, the CFA said in the statement, and it pledged to create upright soccer ecology and further the reform and development of Chinese soccer.

Since the investigation of Li Tie, former head coach of China men's national soccer team in November 2022 for serious violations of the law, a number of players, managers and officials have been put under investigation, including former secretary general of the CFA Liu Yi and executive vice secretary general of the CFA and head of the national team management department Chen Yongliang.

The investigation of several soccer figures in a row, including high-level officials, shows that the latest anti-corruption storm in Chinese soccer is reaching a peak. Chen's fall reflects the great determination of this campaign, observers noted.

Public information shows that Chen Xuyuan was a dock worker in Shanghai when he was young. Later, he earned an MBA degree and worked for Shanghai Port Group. Chen, previously serving as deputy director of the Shanghai Port Authority and Party secretary and chairman of Shanghai International Port Co, took the position of CFA president in December 2019.

Every time there is a large-scale anti-corruption move in Chinese soccer, it is always followed by a window of time for progress and healthy development, veteran soccer journalist and former CFA official Wang Dazhao told the Global Times on Wednesday.

"Whether this period can be used and how it can be used is very important for Chinese soccer," he stressed, adding that it would be a great thing for Chinese soccer if its personnel can make good use of this period.

The Chinese soccer community had experienced an "earthquake" in 2009 because of the match-fixing scandal. Xie Yalong and Nan Yong, the former vice chairman of the CFA and former director of the National Football Management Center, were both arrested and later sentenced to 10.5 years in prison.

Many players were also arrested and several clubs were sentenced to points, fines and relegation. The handling of this match-fixing case was not entirely concluded until 2013.

However, looking back from 10 years later, this huge storm, regretfully, only brought a short period of calm in the Chinese professional league, while the management and competitive level of Chinese soccer was not substantially improved.

"It is important that Chinese soccer should have an effective regulatory mechanism in place to safeguard the efforts of those who are truly trying to contribute to the industry," he said.

"Over a period of time, a strong regulatory mechanism will ensure the short-term development of soccer to await the long-term progress of multiple factors such as social attitudes, sports culture and economic development, which will enable Chinese soccer to achieve long-term development," Wang said.

Just cancel Men’s Soccer team or volunteer them for coal mining duties in North Korea. They are a disgrace.

China completes first national survey on natural disaster risks

China recently completed its first national survey on natural disaster risks, basically understanding the risks of hidden natural disasters across the nation, an official said at a press conference Wednesday.
The nationwide survey, which lasted from 2020 to 2022 and involved 5 million people, collected a vast amount of data about natural hazards, said Zheng Guoguang, secretary-general of the China National Commission for Disaster Reduction.
"This is the first time for China to conduct a comprehensive risk survey on multiple disaster-affected bodies since the founding of New China. There is no ready-made experience or method to follow. The survey has also promoted and improved the investigation of disaster-inducing factors and led to the investigation of disaster-affected bodies. It is groundbreaking," said Zheng.
Through the survey, China has basically figured out the hidden hazards across the country and secured a clear picture of the capacity of key regions to respond to natural disasters, Zheng said, adding that the survey has laid a solid foundation for further disaster risk assessment and zoning.
The country has also investigated 89 major disasters that happened since 1949 including major earthquakes, floods, typhoons, forest and grassland fires, as well as data related to the disaster-relief measures, Zheng said.
The country also used the data acquired to build a database that includes information about all buildings nationwide, according to Zheng.
The leading group of the survey under the State Council is working with related departments and local authorities to push ahead with the construction of a national database for natural disasters, to enhance China's disaster prevention and control efforts.
