A vice mayor in eastern China has been suspended from his post after his affair with another married official became public last week in a tabloid-style sex scandal.
The 45-year-old married government official named Wei Feng was stood down from his vice mayoral position with the city of Huai’an in Jiangsu province on January 13 after an official investigation upheld accusations he had “inappropriate contact” with another local official named Dai Lu.
Local media reported that the pair’s affair was discovered by Dai’s husband after he installed a hidden camera in a room at their home called the “marriage room”. When he discovered footage of Wei and Dai reportedly being intimate, he reported the affair to the local discipline inspection commission.
Local authorities then set up a team to look into the accusations, which subsequently found that Wei and Dai had “inappropriate contact” with each other but did not provide further details about its findings.

The pair met in 2021 when Wei served as the committee secretary in the district where Dai worked in Yangzhou, Jiangsu.
In 2022, Wei was promoted to the position of vice mayor of Huai’an, which required him to move there from Yangzhou, but he maintained frequent close contact with Dai afterwards.
Peng Xinlin, a professor at the College for Criminal Law Science of Beijing Normal University, told China Newsweek: “The act between Wei and Dai is an adultery, violating a life of discipline.”
He added that governors are held to some of the highest moral standards in society and have a duty to set a good example for the public.
The tabloid nature of the story has sparked widespread discussion on mainland social media.

One person asked: “There is an old saying that the mud comes out with the radish, so what’s the story behind the affair?”
A second person said: “From ancient times to the present, the allure of beauty always works.”
“Is the exchange between power and sex a common thing in officialdom?” Another person wondered.
Another user suggested: “Maybe we need an independent commission against corruption.”
