China naval drills in East China Sea

Some Japanese media recently claimed that the Chinese navy ships on April 10 has been through the coastal waters of Okinawa, the southernmost of Japan into the "Okinotori" (China, said Chong Bird Reef) offshore, and then ring "island" navigation circle. Japanese media said the Chinese Navy's action could be seen as a time that Japan's "demonstration." However, according to a Chinese military personnel to the "Global Times" revealed that Chinese warships were carried out is a normal defensive drill, and did not reach the Okinotorishima reef.

China said Thursday that its naval ships in the East China Sea did not violate international law, after Japanese media alleged that two Chinese submarines and eight destroyers were spotted circling Japan's Okinotori coral reefs.
Huang Xueping, a spokesman with the Chinese Ministry of National Defense, warned countries concerned to not track down or disrupt the activities of Chinese military vessels engaged in normal defense exercises.

"We will investigate whether China has any intention against our nation" by dispatching the vessels, Japanese Defense Minister Toshimi Kitazawa said last week.

A military source told the Global Times Thursday that Chinese vessels had not reached Okinotori coral reefs.

Huang said the Chinese navy's drills on the high seas are common practice, and will not pose a threat to other countries.

Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada said Wednesday the Chinese vessel had not violated international law. Ministry officials also said the incident would have limited impact on bilateral relations.

If anything, International Law stipulates that crossing thoroughfares like through the Japanese atolls is not considered a violation of territorial waters.

PS: In another note, International Law also stipulate that the owner of the exclusive economic zone has jurisdiction over all scientific, research and intelligence activity within it *cough*

The japanese media are making a big deal out of nothing. I mean, what? Do they think they have the right to disallow Chinese ships though the first island chain? They need to get used of it, more of such event will naturally happen over the coming years and decades with the Chinese navy now finally regaining strength after the 1895 sino japanese war.

The excellent link posted by SampanViking pretty much summed up the operation. Apparently, the Chinese task force knew where the Japanese ships were at all the time. The Chinese were testing out their new satellites that support their navy.

Who knows if the Japanese were "surprised" or not. The Chinese helicopter buzzing the Japanese warship is garden variety military behavior.

Such incidents are a godsend to the Japanese admiralty though. If Chinese ships skirting around the Japanese home islands won't increase the Japanese Navy's budget, nothing ever will.

Quite frankly I am sick and tired of these China threat rants!

China is a rising power and how could her navy possibly achieve power projection if it is forced to stay within Chinese borders! The Chinese navy passed through international waters and it is perfectly legal to do that. Besides, whereelse should the Chinese fleet have passed through? The Taiwan strait?:rofl::rofl:

Why should it feel the need to throw its military weight around after all China's been claiming her rise is a peaceful one.

Officially China complained the American survy ship disupted Chinese fishing activities using active sonar. Similarly Japan complained about the Chinese helo hoovering above a Japanese destroyer within "dangerous proximity" risking colliding accidents.

As to naval power projection, China also made it clear it's for the sake of protecting maritime trading routes, overseas humanitarian operations etc.

A noticeable exclusion from the "peaciful doctrin" is the separationistic movement in Taiwan, then again, China regards the matter domestic other than international (domestic power projection?)

Thats acceptable, but I also think its to show surrounding nations, what I big and growing stick she has, and if they don't do as China asks, shes not afraid to use it under the guise of protecting its interests.

I don't read it that way. Every country has the right to protect their SLOC . If that mean sending a fleet so be it . After all oil is bloodline of a country.

Dont forget that one of the cause of pacific war is US embargo on oil and Japan need to get oil from Dutch EAst Indie
