I don't think it is Boss, Check out the paint and those decals on equipment,,, if they were J-16's, (1-2 years old), that stuff would be crispy and new looking, that paint on the instrument hood appears to have "oxidized", and has a soft chalky looking appearance, not like hard smooth new non-reflective gray???

correct me if I'm wrong, but I've been in enough cockpits to recognize "shop-worn"??? but hey, I'm the AFB, I could always be wrong, cause I'm a Brat...

If a J-7 can win against the Su-27 during DACT exercises, a Mirage-2000 (especially the upgraded ones used by the ROCAF) can very possibly win against a Su-30.

In WVR, anything can happen between two aircraft of the same generation

But I'm not sure if the OP even talked about either side "winning" and during peacetime neither side is flying to kill.

In the story the Mirages tried to acquire an lock but the Su-30s broke off and counterlocked. The Mirages departed shortly after.

Yes. And it isn't really that impressive considering the fact that the Mirage-2000 is handicapped by bad thrust to weight ratio. The Su-30 pilots have also trained extensively against J-10s, which performs similarly to the Mirage-2000 under certain flight conditions.

I thought if a fighter tried to acquire a lock, the other side would assume that a missile would be launched so the other side had a right to fire a missile ... no?

If it was the case the Mirage pilot is very brave or might be stupid

Might put a spanner in the arguments of some DC folks that the ROCAF is better trained enough to offset the difference in air power though.
