Please tell us more about this visual aid. In what scenarios is it used for and by whom?

Is it used by the ground crew to properly line up with the plane, as seen in the image below?

Or is it used by cameramen to properly line up with the plane when taking a frontal shot of the aircraft?

Some pretty screen grabs of J-16s.

That dark grey area behind the cockpit looks like a conforming fuel tank. But I don't think flankers ever need those or ever used one. Wonder what it is....
