This might interest you: a new photo posted by weibo user @秋秋Q30 showcases a J-16 (not J-16D judging by the presence of the IRST and the lack of wingtip pods) carrying a pair of never-seen-before pods. Personally I think there's a reasonable chance that the pods are for the J-16D and for whatever reason this yellow-primered J-16 with designation 1615 (possibly one used by 601th institution for testing?) is testing out the pod instead.
