There is nothing surprising about the image itself. What is surprising is the caption, which stated that the pilot of the J-16 used data provided by his wing man to locate, engage, and destroy his target.

this reminds me of this post

I think it is news for Flankers but Mig-31 is doing the real time data transfer for the last 30 years so the idea is very much out there for decades. It is a great tool mostly because in groups, the fighters can trace a very large area, almost making AWACS planes redundant.

I just learned that the J-16 was deployed in Shaheen VIII last year. I think that's the first time that this A/C has shown up at this joint exercise.

I've heard about that capability on the Mig-31s, but I don't think it replaces an AWACS fully. I imagine the fighters will typically be facing in one direction, while a 3 face AWACS has 360 degree coverage.

Is it using the WS-10 engine? I think the silvery and shorter petals of the engine tip are the giveaways, but maybe I'm wrong.

Also, it's interesting J-16 still use the back mounted airbrake. The new Su-35 China just bought had dispensed with those. I think I've read somewhere they now use some combination of other existing control surfaces as airbrake, which leaves more space on the back for more fuel.

J-16 has never been seen with a Russian engine, ever.
