weibo comment from @jetfighter2000 :
After many years of production of the 06 batch, CCTV broadcasted the program in September 2017, revealing that SAC has restarted the J-11B production line and started production of the new 07 batch. However, from the appearance, the new batch of J-11B lacks obvious improvement in the fire control system, and its combat weapons are still the previous generation of PL-12 mid range AAM and PL-8B close combat AAM , not the latest generation. The PL-15 mid-range and PL-10 combat AAM, so the 07 batch of J-11B is still a pure air superior fighter without accurate ground strike capability. From the perspective of the strategic transformation of the PLAAF offensive and defensive and air and space integration, this can be regarded as a waste of resources.
On the other hand, there rumors for various reasons (including the development of J-15/J-16 series and FC-31 stealth fighters, etc.) J-11B's luxury upgraded version of J-11D has been put on hold. Therefore, the existing J-11B fire control system software was upgraded and the wingtip missile launcher was replaced, enabling it to launch a new generation of PL-10/PL-15 air-to-air missiles and to place precise guidance such as GB500 lasers and GPS-guided bombs. these arms can make the J-11B's operational efficiency immediately improve, and achieve twice the result with half the effort.

If the new J-11s are indeed J-11Bs, this would suggest that the J-11D is facing some notable delays and issues. With the prototype being in existance for at least half a decade by now. To think that the J-11D has not entered mass production is indeed odd and worrisome for the PLAAF.

There will be no J-11D. The reason they imported Su-35s was because that the J-11D didn't offer any significant enhancements to the J-11B other than radar/avionics.

To put things in perspective:

1. The J-11D first flew in April 2015 (which makes the prototype less than 4 years old)
2. It takes roughly 4 years for PLAAF Flankers to enter service (J-11B first flew in 2004, entered service in 2008; J-15 first flew in 2009, entered initial operating capability in 2013; J-15 first flew in 2011, entered service in 2015)
3. We have seen satellite images of what seems to be multiple J-11D prototypes as recently as late 2017
4. The most recent photograph of the J-11D is from February of this year (2018). Granted, we don't know if the photo itself was taken around that time.

That being said, it is certainly possible that the J-11D program is facing some sort of delay or PLAAF re-assessment, but it is equally possible that it simply hasn't finished flight testing just yet.

Aren't radar improvements and avionics overhaul enough of a justification for an MLU or new airframe? J-11D IIRC has a few other key improvements as well, such as IFR capability and allegedly the ability to mount heavy air-to-surface missiles.

I don't think there is any definitive evidence that the J-11D program has been axed, just a few rumors here and there.

And is not that the most important trait in modern air to air combat? To say that the PLAAF does not value effective radar and avionics in the face of emerging 5th gen fighters is unbelievable to put it mildly, especially since every other new front line fighter they introduce comes with AESA radars and interservice systems merging as standard.

Maybe the J-11D was put on hold until the WS-10IPE was ready? In the engine thread, it was mentioned just a day ago that the WS-10IPE would reach 142 kN. That is the same as the Saturn 117S on the Su-35. Actually, the 117S reaches 142 kN in an 'emergency mode' or in other words '***k the MTBO mode' -

.

Edit: J-11D should be at least be equal to the J-16 in avionics (Maybe superior).
