In correct circumstances a generation older fighter could turn from Turkey shoot stuff to a real headache.

I wouldn't read to much into this gents, look at Indiana Jones, guy with sword, gonna lose to guy with Handgun, BANG! If you're thinking those poor old J-8's are gonna be viable against anybody who's seriously playing the A2A game???? Bang!

Might serve as a distraction from your 5Gen??? or your 4Gen, but it won't be fun for the J-8 drivers, even two on one as the odds were?

AWAC's are NOT gonna be able to provide "targeting to those J-8s".

Even without AWACs, older fighter can still pose a threat under the right conditions. There are cases of Mig-25 shooting down F-18, Mig-23 shooting down F-16 & F-14 etc

OT.IMO None of the shoot downs have been conclusively proven.
Strange how the Iraqi Air force never made a claim of downing a F18. and not one peep of it from Baghdad Bob and Saddam who would have been boasting about it over the media outlets.

Considering most of time the pilot has no idea he is fire upon until impact I would say AEWAC is a big enough advantage for old fighters to have a fair fight against generational advanced enemy.

The F-18 in question was on a bombing mission though. Its loadout was unfavorable.

AWAC's are NOT gonna be able to provide "targeting to those J-8s".

The last J-8F/H are enough decent fighters BVR capable and AWACS is a Force multiplier for all aicrafts less efficient vs Stealth fighters ofc but with their more big/powerful radars in general have more chance detected Stealth remains naturaly difficult.

It never happened for F-14/18 and i don' t think for F-16 sure for Israel vs Syria, Libya
