In fact, Boeing just bought the companies that designed those planes.
The Eagle was a product of designed by McDonnell Douglas and the Hornet was originally a Northrop aircraft.

I won't to be hasty in blaming the SAC for the inferior AESA radar that they chose. Maybe they have another judgement. Like the shape of radar and the aircraft aerodynamic ability. Just look at the J-11D. They have to re-design the radome in favor to the newer AESA radar. So maybe their decission on choosing the AESA radar in J-16 because of the shape. And because it is cheaper to choose the inferior AESA (because the shape was fitted easier in the J-16), then they decide to choose that inferior AESA.
But they take the better AESA after that, by developing the J-11D.
i think the point is that we know connections and other factors play a role in how they determine which radar firm to pick and it was documented in that widely discussed blog entry a while ago. So in this case, it's quite likely that had a role here. But the bigger issue is that PLAAF has certain requirements for its radar. And if it is indeed rejecting J-16 due to not achieving requirement, then I think that's a good sign they are not just accepting whatever SAC or CAC gives them.
Is CAC involved in J-16 in any meaningful way? I was under the impression it was an SAC run show.
They are not. My point was that regardless of the aircraft or the producer, it has the right to be demanding.
Well, I am working on my next model...waiting for my 1/350 scale USS Haprer's Ferry, LSD-49, to get here later this week.
So, it's the PLAN J-11B I am working on. I'll have a thread fro the build, but here is where she is right now:
Lot's of work to do...but she is coming along nicely.
I will give her a full A2A missile load out.
When completed, it means I will have the following PRC aircraft finished in 1/72 scale:
J-10S
J-11B
J-15
J-20
JH-7A

Boeing has done a fine job continuing to nurture production and sales of both the F-18, and F-15, and will have a fine workshare in the F-35, but you are right about the X-32, and it was ugly to boot.
