Two Su-30s intercepted a foreign plane on Chinese New Year.

1) This is considered very big news. The first time I saw it was on CCTV at a friend's house yesterday. It was the first news item that showed up.
2) Rumor cjdby has it that the aircraft was painted gray.
3) JSDAF has yet to make an announcement about this.

I saw the news on Sina.com, QQ News, ... however, the way to they posted it like narrating a novel that's why I give it low credibility and decide not to re-post that news here. They also have some photos of the Su-30 but I believe the posted photos are not from the above air-interception.

The Bagu article was pretty much riddled with holes. Never trust a journalist with air-combat. The scenario he described was straight out of the Korean War.

The photos of the Su-30s are definitely from earlier. However the news itself has to be credible since it was shown on CCTV 7 during the actual news segment.

Well , intercepted is a strong term . They probably approached and identified foreign aircraft . Also , would PLAAF use Su-30 ? Aren't they strike fighters in Chinese doctrine ?

The JH7As are strike fighters, the Su30MK2s are multirole.

As for why the PLANAF sent them, well probably because they got the legs for it, and IIRC, those MK2s are the only Flanker variant aircraft the PLANAF has other then the J15, which is still not yet operational.

My guess would be that those MK2s were on a CAP to enforce the ADIZ rather than being scrambled to intercept any specific intruder. For such a role, the longer range of the Flanker would make it the obvious choice. I'm sure having two seats to give twice the number of pilots a taste of the action was not lost on PLAN planners either.

It is interesting that both the PLAAF and PLANAF are getting involved in patrolling the ADIZ, I wonder if this will foster greater co-operation or rivalry between the two.

It would be interesting to know what aircraft and how many were coming into the ADIZ and what flight plan they were adopting.

My bet is probably a single or maybe two Japanese F-15s and some kind of aggressive flight pattern to test the Chinese reaction.

I know that Su-30MK2 (and MKK) are multirole , only China prefers to use them as strike fighters because it has other aircraft for air-to-air role . BTW , isn't PLANAF supposed to have J-11BH and J-10A ?

1) PLAAF operates Su-30MKK while PLAN operates Su-30MK2. PLAN was responsible for the intercept.
2) It was an intercept. As in they got wvr and evicted the intruding aircraft.
3) There is no info on whether the intercept happened in ADIZ or Chinese Airspace.

No one violated Chinese airspace, they were likely there to probe the ADIZ, this could happen every-day and night for a year, and probably should, unless its your day off, now China will also no doubt "infringe" upon others ADIZ as well, its all good as long as no one gets stupid. I wouldn't sweat it, this is part of everyone coming up to speed, in reality, no one is ready to tango, that is when the game stops and it will get ugly, for everyones sake, I hope people don't get stupid! But make NO MISTAKE, this is 14 year olds playing with the Hornets nest with a stick, and somebody will get stung, why I recall the time I was throwing corn cobs at a red wasp nest right over my head, red wasp fell off the nest right onto my forehead and whopped me good, advantage Tennessee Red Wasp....changed up from corn cobs to a coffee can full of gasoline,,,,,,,,, fire power upgrade, advantage brat...

The Flanker is the logical bird for over water intercepts as is the F-15. and although the Flanker may be a little more agile, the F-15 is where I will put my Franklin, but then I am biased, but at lieast I'm honest about it. brat

Agree with AFB that no one violated Chinese air space; any Japanese military aircraft that stray into Chinese air space would be forced to land or shot down.
