You have to take drastic measures because the one child policy has distorted the psychology of every Chinese citizen's mind into what a normal family should look like. China is a superpower today solely because of its 1.4 billion people. Without it, they will be relegated to Brazil status. Not sure what the upper limit for the population should be, but China should always aim for a minimum of 2.1 fertility rate like every other country.

India is very incompetent. US has a very productive work force that would take China decades to replicate. If China had 200 million like you were saying, they would be another Brazil.

I'm not worried about what Xi Jinping will do. My concern here is more about what the moderators would do if I were to voice my unfiltered opinions about what I'm reading in this joke of a thread.

All this discussion about China doom with demographic collapse is hurting my brain too. Many equate a dwindling population with Chinese culture and society jumping off a cliff.

Your "200 million" comment is cut from the same brain-hurt cloth. A nuclear war couldn't accomplish that. Just what is it you people think the TFR in China is?

Let's ask you a question: Why is the US scared shitless of China surpassing it? Would it be so frightened if China had 200 million like your risible scenario? China's the total package, it's got the brains and the brawn. Everyone else is missing one or the other (or both).

I said aim for. China as a dictatorship can right the ship better than any democracy.

Thankfully, China's government is run by people with functioning brains who wouldn't do anything as ludicrous as banning all contraception.

What's the point of being a dictatorship when you can't make sudden u-turns that will be good for your country in the long term? China should ban abortions and contraceptives for a decade or two to fix this massive problem immediately.

With a TFR lower than Japan's(it's likely even lower according to unofficial data), raising a child properly is the least of their worries. They managed 6 kids per family when they were a lot poorer before, they can manage 2-3.

India is indeed a country. Now that's brainhurtin.

My "200 million" was to point out indirectly that population numbers don't matter as much as quality /human resources. Not that China's will reach 200 million some time in the future. What I intended as a hyperbole was mistook. TFR in China is approaching 1 figure as graph is going downwards.

Official data was 1.3 for 2020. You can say COVID adjusted it artificially but it is still a huge drop compared to other countries.
