According to the ministry, the number of marriages registered nationwide in the first quarter experienced a drop from 2.14 million pairs in the same period of 2023 to current 1.96 million pairs. The divorce registrations also dropped to 573,000 pairs from 641,000 pairs in the same period last year.
Due to the structural problems of the age of the population, the general trend of declining numbers of marriages will not change. This was further confirmed by the decline in data for the first quarter of this year, He added.
The reason for this, He analyzed, is the decline in the number of young people and the imbalance in the sex ratio of the marriageable population, with 17.52 million more males than females between the ages of 20 and 40, according to the official data. The structural problems will, to a large extent, determine the future development of China's demographic situation, the expert noted.
Yikes, a 8.5% decline. This is devastating news, especially since marriages rose in 2023 and that was a glimmer of hope that things might have stabilized.
China's marriage registrations fall in Q1; annual figures may continue to decline: expert
That's a lot of foreign waifus needed, China needs to open up a policy to solve this problem. To give an idea of the scope of the problem, it would require almost 2% of the world's female population from age 20-40 to come to China to correct this imbalance.
I'm thinking a more radical policy is needed, what about something like foreign wives with Chinese husbands that give birth in China can super fast track Chinese citizenship?
Even if all the Chinese women who can get married choose to get married, there is still more than 17 million lonely marriage age men. This problem is a totally separate problem.Yikes, a 8.5% decline. This is devastating news, especially since marriages rose in 2023 and that was a glimmer of hope that things might have stabilized.
That said, I'm not sure the guys analysis of the reasons is correct. The gender imbalance has been a problem for decades, but the number of young marriageable women hasn't dropped by 50% since 2013. The real problem is cultural changes in society where women who could get married aren't getting married. There needs to be a greater effort to promote family values.
Yeah I agree it's also a problem, it's just not the main reason for the huge decline in marriages.Even if all the Chinese women who can get married choose to get married, there is still more than 17 million lonely marriage age men. This problem is a totally separate problem.
I know that 17.52 million is a large number, but in a country as large as China, this problem would be alleviated if the average man married a younger woman. I don't remember the exact number, but someone on here worked out that if the average Chinese man married a woman roughly two years younger than him, the gender imbalance would no longer be a problem. The issue is largely cultural.Even if all the Chinese women who can get married choose to get married, there is still more than 17 million lonely marriage age men. This problem is a totally separate problem.
That solution clearly doesn't work since it assumes a stable population pyramid which is clearly false as there is already less and less children being born in China.I know that 17.52 million is a large number, but in a country as large as China, this problem would be alleviated if the average man married a younger woman. I didn't know we are comparing quality of life to ancient times, shall we compare historical poverty levels, hunger levels, infant mortality rates too? It's far too late for that, and while 17.52 million sounds like a large number, at a percentage level it is far less than the historical discrepancy between the genders on reproductive success - that is to say, more than 60% of men historically never reproduced vs. 40% of women. It is not expected for every man to find a woman and energy is better spent on the "single by choice" crowd, which makes up a larger and larger % of Chinese men and women, than to try and find a spouse for everyone.
You clearly didn't read the article.Yeah I agree it's also a problem, it's just not the main reason for the huge decline in marriages.
Since you can't fix the number of young people in China, the next best thing you can fix is the unbalanced sex ratio.Due to the structural problems of the age of the population, the general trend of declining numbers of marriages will not change.
