Slidell Police Department is now equipped with the Tiger 4x4 armoured vehicle of Textron.

Textron Marine & Land Systems, an operating unit of Textron Systems, a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company, today presented the Slidell Police Department with the Tiger 4x4 Light Protected Vehicle it donated last month to the City of Slidell. Textron Marine & Land Systems (TM&LS) Senior Vice President and General Manager Tom Walmsley gave the keys to the armored vehicle, valued at $225,000, to Slidell Police Chief Randy Smith during Thursday's presentation at the company's 1010 Gause Blvd. headquarters.

The MDT/Textron Marine & Land Systems Tiger vehicle is a survivable, cost-effective light protected all-terrain vehicle that seats from three to 11 crewmembers. TM&LS is a vehicle manufacturing and marketing partner to MDT Armor, which designed and built the vehicle in Auburn, Ala. Tiger vehicles are currently in use by several customers, including law enforcement entities in Mexico.

"I speak for all the employees of Textron Marine & Land Systems when I say that we are proud to be part of the Slidell community and pleased to contribute this great product to meet a city need," said Walmsley. "The Slidell Police Department does an excellent job for our community, and this Tiger vehicle will provide added capabilities and protection for officers responding to emergencies."

"This donation is very much appreciated and will be a huge asset to the Slidell Police Department and the citizens of Slidell," said Smith. "The Tiger vehicle can be used for multiple purposes, such as evacuating citizens from an active shooting scenario, safely resolving a hostage situation, or any other life or death situation. Hopefully we never need to use it, but in the event we do, our SWAT team will be ready."

In addition to Chief Smith, several members of the SWAT team were on hand for the vehicle presentation. The city plans to paint the vehicle black in the coming weeks. It will carry the markings and logo of the Slidell Police Department SWAT team.
Walmsley added that TM&LS' ability to operate in a safe and vibrant city is important to employees, and helps the company attract top talent. In addition to its headquarters on Gause Boulevard, the company has facilities in Slidell on Front Street and Stone Road. More than 500 TM&LS employees work at these three locations.

Here is another article regarding the Russians advance into Latin America
Where Obama pulls back on Monroe Doctrine, Putin forges ahead

With all eyes on Ukraine, where Russia’s neo-imperial efforts have raised the specter of a new Cold War between Moscow and the West, another alarming facet of the Kremlin’s contemporary foreign policy has gone largely unnoticed; namely, its growing military presence in, and strategic designs on, the Western Hemisphere.

More than anything else, however, Russia’s activities are strategic — and opportunistic. Last fall, Secretary of State John F. Kerry announced with great fanfare that the “era of the Monroe Doctrine is over,” effectively serving notice to foreign powers that the United States has no plans to contest or compete with their growing influence south of our border.

Moscow apparently was listening, and its recent moves suggest that the Kremlin is taking full advantage of America’s retraction from the region to improve its own position there in both economic and strategic terms.

Aeronautics has signed a contract to supply two Dominator XP unmanned air systems to the armed forces of Mexico.

Based on Diamond Aircraft's twin-engined DA42, the Dominator XP has a flight endurance of 28h and is capable of carrying a 300kg (660lb) payload. The modified aircraft can be flown to an altitude of up to 30,000ft (9,150m) and has a top speed of 190kt (351km/h).

A first export sale of the type was made in mid-2011, shortly after Aeronautics had secured clearance from Israel's defence ministry. One Dominator XP is currently operated by CAE in Alma, Quebec, and is being used to support Project "Miskam", which is aimed at evaluating the use of UAS in civil airspace.

The reported new sale to Mexico follows a recent marketing effort to offer the converted aircraft with a variety of payloads. Aeronautics declines to comment on the matter.

As recently reported by Flightglobal, Aeronautics is currently evaluating the conversion of additional manned aircraft types for unmanned operations.

Chile will buy United States army surplus of AAV7 tracked armoured amphibious vehicles.

Chile will buy surplus U.S. stock of a dozen AAV7 armored amphibious vehicles for its new sea-borne Amphibious Expeditionary Brigade, defense industry media reported. Officials say the vehicles are being acquired from excess inventory of U.S. stockpiles but will be upgraded before they are put into service. The cost of the AAV7 acquisition was not mentioned.

The upgrade is likely to be carried out by BAE Systems' Global Combat Systems unit, Defense Market Intelligence and Chile's Defense and Military blog reported. Independent comment on the acquisition and upgrade was not immediately available.

The first of the AAV7s is set to be delivered in 2014 after the upgrade, likely to involve installation of more powerful engines. Chile's purchase includes 10 AAVP7 A1 troop transports, one AAVC7 command vehicle and one AAVR7 recovery vehicle, the reports said.
Manufactured by U.S. Combat Systems, the AAV-7A1 is the current amphibious troop transport of the U.S. Marine Corps.

The vehicles, once commissioned, will be part of a 1,400-strong brigade Chile operates aboard its Sargento Aldea multirole assault ship, acquired from France in a $80 million deal. The Sargento Aldea previously operated in the French navy as the Foudre and served allied forces in NATO Yugoslavia operations in 1992-93 and French military action in Ivory Coast.
