[h=2]Afghan forces take the lead in British-supported operation in Helmand[/h]
British-trained Afghan forces have demonstrated their expanding capability by successfully leading a large and complex operation to build a bridge over the Nahr-e Saraj canal in Afghanistan's Helmand province.

Soldiers from the Afghan National Army as well as members of the Afghan Uniform Police conducted a security sweep through the Lashkar Gah district of Helmand as part of the mission, aimed at consolidating improvements in security.

This major operation was supported by British forces led by 1st Battalion The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment (1 LANCS) who have been advising Afghan security forces in Lashkar Gah.

The operation demonstrated some of the crucial capabilities that the Afghan security forces have developed in recent years, including the installation of vital infrastructure and detection and disposal of improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

It also included a bridge-build across the Nahr-e Saraj canal, before a 72-hour period in which in excess of 50 IEDs and 240 kilograms of homemade explosives were found and dealt with independently of support from their British mentors.

With training for contingency ops a priority, the need to train in all weathers is exemplified by soldiers on the 3 MERCIAN Mortar Cadre. Being able to do your job in the cold or the heat is paramount so the weather provided the perfect training opportunity!

HMS Illustrious in Liverpool.

HMS Illustrious arrived in Liverpool today, Thursday 14th February 2013. The ship will be alongside for 5 days for a routine visit. It is a welcome opportunity for Lusty and her ships company to experience an enjoyable UK run ashore away from her baseport of Portsmouth. There will be a number of events taking place onboard over the weekend to help promote the image of the Royal Navy amongst prominent local dignitaries and organisations. The ship will also open to members of the public over the weekend, so they can see how the navy operates. CROWN COPYRIGHT Photographs by PO(Phot) Ray Jones

Tks Popeye. Glad to know the White Ensign is still flying over a British Carrier - thought it was decommissioned.

The two-week exercise in Otterburn, Northumberland, has tested 1600 soldiers from 18 British Regular and Reserve regiments alongside members of the 35 (French) Regiment Air Parachutiste. The aim of the exercise was to prepare units for future operations, including being part of contingency forces such as the Airborne Task Force or Commando-led elements. [h=2]British Army 3RIFLES hold PJNCO Cadre[/h]
Junior soldiers from the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th Battalions The Rifles have been getting put through their paces by instructors from their Battalions on the final exercise week of a gruelling four week Potential Junior Non-Commissioned Officers (PJNCO) Cadre on Garelochhead Training Area in Scotland.

The Rifles run a number of PJNCO Cadres throughout the year and, having recently returned from Afghanistan, 3RIFLES were the organising Battalion this time around.

The aim of the PJNCO Cadre is to develop leadership potential and prepare Riflemen for promotion to Lance Corporal (LCpl). The training is delivered modularly to teach and qualify Riflemen for employment in a number of key positions - a Rifle Company Second in Command (2IC), a support weapons detachment 2IC or as an account holder. The training covers their responsibilities across this large employment spectrum from tactical skills and techniques through to administrative duties.

Major Ian Posgate, Cadre Director, said

"The candidates must pass a physically demanding course that trains and then evaluates their leadership potential"

"They have to show courage, determination, integrity and demonstrate leadership potential if they are to pass off the square in Redford Barracks, Edinburgh"
