My sons and I went up into the foothills here in Idaho on New Year's Eve to celebrate the New Year in our own pecular way...with a Savage Firearms .308 hunting rifle (which needed its scope zeroed in) and my FAL .308 and Rueger Mini-14 .223.

Lot's of fun!

Looks like fun guys, I'm wimpy I still like my 5.56. Wish I was there i just traded my old ruger flat top 44, I know not smart, for a third gen colt New Frontier 45LC with a 45ACP cylinder and I would like to shoot that. The ACP will be cheaper than the 44special or 44 mag.?

No need to feel bad about 5.56...best tonic in the world sometimes is to just go out and shoot. Find a range, or public land...take the handguns as wll. Can't really go wrong with a Colt IMHO.

We had a lot of fun!

I bet, I have a couple of bolt guns, an old Husqie on a 98 action, and a new mod 70 winchester with the claw extractor, and a few other toys. One buddy and I used to shoot at least once a month, but I changed jobs. I wish we were close its so much more fun shooting with a couple of buddies to laugh at ya & with ya.Glad your boys like to shoot with you, my son in law in the army took me shooting a few months ago, but now he takes his brother. I may have outshot him? or maybe it was just my cherokee victory dance? LOL

Hey, Head over to Gollys Quiz, its right up your alley, also Scratch had an aerodynamics question in response to my statement that the carnards have high dihedral to keep the tip vortices, from the canard, from spoiling the lift at High AOA. See if my response makes any sense, feel free to clarify. Happy New year Bro!

Glad you all had fun, I have a confession to make here, I have never in my life fired a gun, even an air gun!

Now that looks fun indeed. Did you bring your own targets and then put them somewhere on the hills, or just fire at whatever you could find in the coutryside? :)

Now, from an uninformed person who has never fired a revolver. What actually is the point / excitement in owning one. Do it once and say you've done it, I can get that. But to me a Revolver always looks so, archaic almost:) When they didn't have anything esle back in the day, it was good to have one. But now that semi auto pistols are around with big magazines and the refined handgrips and all, the small, strangly formed hand grip on a Revolver looks almost uncomfortable. How can you do controlled shooting when it looks like you can't grab the gun properly. ;)

Next time you are in the states. If you can get over to Idaho, we'll fix that for you. But beware, once hooked, you won't want to stop. Have to join a gun club there in the UK or something.

We set up several targets at the base of those rocks about 100m out there.

Also shot at various dicolorizations on the rocks themselves.

As to hand guns, and particularly revolvers, believe me, shooting a Smith and Wesson .44 mag or anything similar is a lot of fun, whatvwe would call quite a "hoot"!

Set some target up at 20-30 m and knock 'em down. One gallon jugs full of liquid or some such like a cant elope or watermelon, or can of chile...with those large calibers, they will just explode!

Scratch, Scratch, Scratch, lad you are quite the pup, you sound like one of the emporers minions questioning lord Vader, me thinks you should spend more time with bd or the Headmaster. Now to qualify, I have several springfield armory 45s rather bulky for only 7 rounds, a Colt Gov 38 super, very svelte, but honestly nothing comes to hand, or spins on my index finger quite so handily as the FN 1935 GP. To feel that lovely grip frame, with those lovely old Blonde Browning walnut grip panels, no double stack autopistole will compare. Having said that sir, if I absolutely, positively have to hit something beyond 50 yds, a Smith and Wesson Model 29, 44magnum will be in my hand. The old plow handled Colt peacemaker, close your eyes, now go for your gun, it naturally falls to hand, points well even without sights to those who are willing to spend the time to master it. Six well placed rounds are always better than 19 rounds with the "spray and pray" method. Kind of like kids, all different, but you love em all! My little teutonic heart does love that little browning Hi-Power, but I feed it only ball ammo if it has to function. On the other hand, my revolvers will fire anything I put in the cylinder that is combustable. To put it in practical terms, when you pull the trigger on your automatic, it remains in battery until the bullet has left the barrel, the extractor grabs the case by the rim and as the slide unlocks begins to pull it rearward until the rim strikes the ejector, in the meantime the barrel has dropped out of the locking lugs of the slide and the empty breech is refilled by the slide stripping the top round off the magazine and pushing it up into the chamber as it pushes the barrel up and forward into battery and the trigger disconnector disengages. Thats a great deal more monkey motion than a single or double action revolver. As you have pointed out already, it depends a lot on whats between your ears. Shame we can't all get together and join Jeff and the boys, then you could shoot a little bit of everything, the revolver is actually much more functional that it looks and as much as I love an Obernedorf Model 98 Mauser, I'd probably still select some variant of the AR for close quarters.
