Honestly I kinda get why. When we look at stuff RCEP and China-ASEAN, we can see quite a lot of progress. Especially guys like Indonesia who have surpassed my initial expectations.

In contrast, BRICS has done little compared to the hype it gets. And it will continue to do so as long as guys like India are in it.

So when you see far better performing groups compared to underperforming ones, you realign your priorities. Xi is getting older and doesn't have all the time and energy in the world to go around for photoshoots. He focuses on areas that have better returns like ASEAN or central asia with guys like Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Its pretty telling when guys who are related to the ancient Xiongnu and others that kept fighting China for centuries are more understanding and easier to deal with than some other guys.

That was the first thing in my mind maybe western sources already knew this and planted all those coup stories.
But from what i heard from Pepe Escobar that this BRICS meeting will be meh Brasil and India's heart are just not in it.
That Brasil is much more focused on the G20 event happening in november this year.

Yeah ASEAN and central Asia plus maybe Iran might pay bigger dividends in the future, BRICS really feels more like a Russian project given the amount of PR resources and youtube channels they are creating. Maybe because China couldn't care less about this BRICS event, Putin invited Indonesia to that economic event in Saint Petersburg. As a signal that Russia also want to pivot toward ASEAN. ASEAN is a huge market, on the brink of having to need a lot of energy and commodities to build out their economies in the short term future.

China was there first. Russia needs to wait for its turn. Russia shouldn't act like it knew all along how great ASEAN is when China was the one who gave them a chance when they needed it most.

Russians don't seem like good investors honestly. They made a lot of bad picks historically. They're the reason BRICS and SCO are going nowhere coz they thought it was such a good idea to twist China's arm in allowing India in. They got repaid hard for that in rupees worth less than toilet paper. CSTO is a joke and its no wonder people keep saying how central asia wants to go to China instead. Historically speaking guys like Kazakhstan had good relations with the Qing so they actually have more reason to pivot to China.
