Bloomberg News, citing Moselhy, had earlier reported that India was providing Egypt with a credit line worth an unspecified value. The news agency said that the minister did not give further details on the facility.

"Nothing of the sort has been implemented but there are discussions so that we can trade in local currencies of countries like India, Russia or China," the minister told Reuters.

In just 77 days after the establishment of Honduras-China diplomatic relations, bilateral ties have seen tremendous development, and have been growing like “a robust tree” benefiting the people of both sides. The two countries are expected to sign on Monday 19 memorandums and documents addressing cooperation including the Belt and Road memorandum, Honduran Foreign Minister Enrique Reina told the Global Times in an exclusive interview on Sunday.

“This is my second visit to China, and this time we were able to visit Shanghai. I believe what we are doing is very important,” Reina told the Global Times as Honduras officially inaugurated its embassy in Beijing on Sunday.

The inauguration of the Honduran Embassy in China holds great significance, and Honduras reiterates that it upholds the one-China principle and is looking forward to cooperating with China in trade and business, Belt and Road and Global Development Initiatives, the Honduran diplomat said during the embassy inauguration ceremony.

We will sign 19 memorandums and documents including one memorandum about the cooperation under the Belt and Road initiative, reflecting the positive progress of the bilateral relations. And significant results will be achieved during this visit, Reina told the Global Times.

The inauguration ceremony was held during a six-day state visit by Honduran President Xiomara Castro to China, which also marks the first visit to the country by a Honduran president.

Reina also attended the inauguration of the Chinese Embassy in Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, on June 5 (local time), and he said he believes that with the presence of each embassy, there will be new opportunities and capabilities to enhance the cooperation between the two countries.

“I think we are working very fast and very strong in the strain of our relation with China. And it's very important for us to recognize the importance of principle of one-and-sole China. I think that is very important to deepen this relationship between the two countries,” he said.

From this visit, a lot of important decisions will be made by the top leaders of the two countries that will take the Honduras-China relations into a new era, and also the signing of several documents will improve the opportunity for cooperation between the two sides, Reina said.

The cooperation between the two sides will cover various areas including trade, cultural exchanges and education. China’s is learning more about Honduras, while Honduras is learning more about China, Reina noted.

Reina also revealed that in early July, a Chinese deputy minister of commerce is expected to visit Honduras to promote the signing of a free trade agreement.

after she visited the headquarters of the bank in Shanghai on Saturday. She also visited a Huawei research center on the same day, highlighting pragmatic cooperation during her trip to China.

Reina also noted that Honduras hopes to be part of the BRICS. “I think there's a new opportunity for financial issues that Honduras will be seen as a new opportunity for projects in development, in either in the social or economic way” that will improve the people’s livelihoods, Reina said.

When it comes to the influence of the US on Honduras and other Central American countries amid the tense US-China rivalry, the Honduran foreign minister said the decision of Honduras to recognize the one-China principle is a sovereign decision.

“We don't see that this is an issue that will come or have any problem that we maintain good relations with the US and we will strengthen and come together for our future relations with China,” he said.
These agreements are in the old language. It is now a new era, with a new global leadership and renewed, stronger, international rules. New language is needed. We should no longer speak of "one China" but of "security guarantees" and "national defense and continued integrity", these are universal terms for all countries.

Of course, there is no way Honduras and most random third world countries can help defend China militarily, but an economic security guarantee means that these countries have made public their intention to economically isolate any aggressor against China, that they recognize Chinese territorial defense and national security.

And in return, China will support the same measures to protect these countries from both economic and military coercion.

That is the same as the current deal China has with many countries, just worded in a way that makes it universally applicable to every country in the world that isn't an enemy.

Major African state applies to join BRICS

The bloc’s push for de-dollarization has attracted Egypt

Egypt has officially applied to join BRICS, Russia’s ambassador in Cairo told reporters on Wednesday. The Arab Republic of nearly 100 million people would be a significant addition to the bloc of the largest developing economies that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

Egypt is “very interested” in one of BRICS’ current initiatives, namely the bloc’s push to switch to alternative currencies in trade, be it one of the bloc’s national currencies or a new joint one, ambassador Georgy Borisenko told TASS news agency.

Egypt first voiced its intention to join BRICS last July, according to Purnima Anand, the President of the BRICS International Forum. In February, the country sent official letters to the bloc’s members expressing its interest in joining, something that Russia supports, according to ambassador Borisenko. Also in February, Egypt joined the New Development Bank, established by the group to fund infrastructure and sustainable development projects in emerging markets and developing countries.

About a dozen countries have so far applied to join BRICS, including Iran and Argentina. The bloc hopes to introduce a framework for admitting new members before the August summit in South Africa.

BRICS is pushing towards trade in national currencies and has begun efforts to establish a joint payment network to cut reliance on the Western financial system, and particularly on the dollar. It has been gaining traction since the West imposed economic sanctions against Russia over its military operation in Ukraine. As a result of the restrictions, Moscow was effectively cut off from the Western banking system and saw billions in its assets frozen or seized abroad.

According to Jim O’Neill, the former chairman of Goldman Sachs, and other experts, BRICS could in time and under certain circumstances challenge the status of the US dollar as the global reserve currency.

Bangladesh applies to join BRICS

The South Asian country has formally asked to become a member of the international economic bloc

Bangladesh has become the latest country to express interest in joining the BRICS economic group, with reports on Monday revealing that Dhaka has sent a formal request to become a member. The issue is expected to be discussed at the BRICS summit scheduled to take place in South Africa in August.

News of Bangladesh’s request was first shared by the Dhaka Tribune newspaper, citing a source familiar with discussions held between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa in Geneva last Wednesday. According to the outlet, Dhaka officially asked to join the bloc, which consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, during the meeting.

Bangladesh Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen has since confirmed the move. He noted that Dhaka, which is currently recognized as a ‘Friend of BRICS’, has already sent a formal letter to the current chair of the group, South Africa.

Over the past year and a half, a number of countries from around the world have shown increased interest in joining the BRICS group, amid the West’s leveraging of international financial systems to wage a widespread economic campaign against Russia.

Russia’s deputy foreign minister, Sergey Ryabkov, stated last week that there are currently nearly two dozen states that are considering joining the bloc. Arab countries such as Algeria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and the UAE have all expressed interest in greater ties with the group, as have Argentina, Mexico, Bahrain, Indonesia, and Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov suggested on Friday that the reason so many countries are interested in joining the bloc is due to the effectiveness and authority of the BRICS alliance.

“This is not the effect of Russia’s ongoing policies, it is the effect of the prospects for the development of such an integration association as BRICS,” Peskov said. He stressed that the group is “an association of countries that share a common approach aimed at developing relations based on benefit and mutual respect and not lecturing each other on how to live, on whom to rely and whom to follow.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has also stated that new BRICS members would enrich the multipolar foundations of the group, but noted that decisions on accepting requests must be made by consensus among existing members.
