One question about the 076, how fast will it be? If its speed is similar to that of other amphibious ships, then it means PLAN consider it as a new evolution of LHD. If it can keep up CVs and other combatants, then it's a revolution and will play more roles for PLAN.
Also in the bid document, it mensioned 21MW gas turbine and 6MW diesel. So we can expect 80MW propulsion if 4 each. That will easily be 26-27knots

according to the document, 076 has well deck and vehicle deck, also EM catapult and arresting cable. So it must be a fast amphibous ship

The catapult will be UAV-only, right? In that case we still don't know anything for sure. And they ain't necessarily install 4 turbines. Who knows...

what ever catapult you installed, you always need deck wind to save your deck from catapult length. That will be 25 knots at least I think.

Given the composition of the fleet today, most of the ships are modern and were recently added within the past 6 years
So most of the new builds will be additions to the fleet, and there won't be many retirements
I therefore expect PLAN numbers to actually increase substantially.

Right. But specifically speaking in the period 2035-2050, the PLAN can change the composition of shipbuilding from smaller to larger ships, increasing firepower. I have no doubt that 2021-2035 the PLAN substantially increases the numbers of naval units.
And even if PLAN numbers stagnate or even decrease, would that actually be a problem if the fleet actually had greater combat power?
Of course not. I'm just considering that the PLAN fleet will not grow indefinitely, even if the Chinese economy grows indefinitely.

From the public official bid requirement for R&D of 076, it has well deck and vehical deck. So it's obviously still an LHD.
I didn't know about this information, this may change a few things regarding your roles that we've been talking about so far.

I think that depends on what kind of UAV(s) it will operate. If the 076 is large enough, the length of the catapult may not be an issue. If you have to install 4 turbines, the configuration will be complicated, you may end up with two sets of funnels. That's tricky.

You see the Wasp LHDs with 2 LM2500 gas turbines

I expect the Type-076 will have 2 gas turbines as well

Two turbines = typical speed of amphibious ships (~22 knots), then the 076 is just a new evolution of LHDs.
If it could reach at least 27 knots, that would be a totally different story, beyond a pre amphibious ship.

The crucial difference is that the Type-076 has EMALs catapults and arresting gear.
So it can be used to test out a new UCAV carrier doctrine which carries GJ-11s
But the Type-076 can still carry out amphibious operations

I expect the Type-076 will work out as a UCAV carrier, and then we will see a more specialised variant to support fleet carriers
