o3:

The bad news: it's extremely expensive.

The good news: cheaper than o1 while being much more performant.

o4 mini is a disappointment. Worse than Gemini 2.5 pro while costing 3 times more.

OpenAI still has big problems with cost. They released o1 back in Sept of 2024. It took them a long while to release o3 (they skipped o2 for copyright reasons). OpenAI has a slow release cadence in addition to being expensive, even if they are still competing for the performance crown. Deepseek is rumored to release R2 within weeks, so this is a big opportunity for them.

I still don't get why deepseek triggers them so much but not qwen which is also open source.

I guess when Alibaba is the one behind it then it's ok. When it's some quant fund who just did it as a side project for fun is kicking your ass, you probably would be butthurt.

Deepseek triggers USians because it is what stands between them and total global AI dominance .

Qwen -just like Llama and Mistral - is a side show.

This.

Deep Seek was competitive with the West’s best and they open sourced the whole thing crashing the AI market. Qwen was not and never intended to be.

China does need more players in this space. Outside of Deep Seek we haven’t seen another similarly competitive “all purpose” AI company yet. Sure China is strong in video & increasingly audio models. But where’s the Deep Seek rival?

keep an eye out on this. Tencent/Yuanbao combo really shone recently. They have infrastructure to handle requests from 8 million users at the same time. From all I hear, they have no issue handling the requests that are coming through. Which is quite significant.

And they continue to build up their cluster. We are now hitting the phase of AI deployment, app and agents. Having infrastructure that can handle these things is important. If you have WeChat like Tencent, then you have all the eyeballs already. Not to be underestimated.
