"They kept their same hiring philosophy of hiring outsiders: new-grads who are brilliant, passionate and curious over experienced AI Researchers"

that's the real strength of China. young talented grads who is actually mad about Ai and wanted to do something.

Pretty much the same story in all high tech sectors. very hard to compete with China.

Each generation has something to contribute. The boomers and gen x were the hands that built China, and millennials and gen z were the minds that propelled it to the bleeding edge.

calculation

$5.5B is around 40B RMB
If a set of 8 Ascend chips is on average 1 million RMB and 5 PFLOPS, then 40B RMB gets you 320,000 and about 200 EFLOPS

Another 200 EFLOPS probably from Nvidia chips, but at some point, the Nvidia stuff will get cut off, I would imagine.

BAT (baidu, Alibaba, Tencent) probably require another 400k

Other big AI players like iFlyTek, Huawei, Sensetime and Zhipu need at least 300k. And then you have the EDWC project and smaller guys that need about 300k.

So we are looking at Huawei supplying around 1.3 to 1.5 million chips this year.

Huge release from ByteDance Doubao.

Claims that their reasoning model is better than o1 in AIME. We will see once the non-preview version comes out.

Overall, Doubao-1.5 is SOTA, It's scores are comparable or better to GPT-4o, and latest from Gemini and Claude teams

I remember a year ago, the Chinese AI firms kept comparing to models that American firms had 6 months earlier and were falling a little short. How far things have changed.

Straight from the horses' month. $12B on AI chips from ByteDance this year. Including $5.5B on Chinese chips and $6.8B on Nvidia ones. Again, not sure how that works given the recent export controls.
Very curious to see direct comparison of cutting edge domestic AI chips vs Nvidia's. I am convinced that the future of VR/AR experiences is going to revolve around AI-powered procedural/generative environments and interactions.

The country's first heterogeneous humanoid robot training ground officially opened in Shanghai.

the National and Local Co-built Humanoid Robot Innovation Center (hereinafter referred to as the "National and Local Center") that the National and Local Center's embodied intelligent training ground was officially opened in Shanghai. The training ground is the country's first heterogeneous humanoid robot training ground, with an area of more than 5,000 square meters. The first phase will deploy more than 100 heterogeneous humanoid robots, which will help humanoid robot technology breakthroughs and application implementation.

The construction of the first phase of the training ground focuses on four major goals: first, building reconfigurable scenarios and heterogeneous robots, covering more than 10 scenarios in the three major fields of intelligent manufacturing, people's livelihood services and special applications, and being able to migrate a collection of more than 100 heterogeneous humanoid robots; second, building a heterogeneous cluster acquisition, training and promotion open source framework, launching the country's leading open source data set of real and generative actions, training general skill models to form a general skill library and knowledge transfer and deployment capabilities; third, embodying intelligent operation and task scheduling, and jointly launching a complete "intelligent operating system-skill library-task orchestration" application system with upstream and downstream companies in the ecosystem, completing the construction of the "humanoid data management and control platform-5G communication infrastructure platform", and completing reliable and stable "transmission-display-scheduling" work in data networking; fourth, open source sharing and contribution mechanism, creating an OpenLoong four-level open source membership model based on the training ground, promoting the open source sharing of training data sets, and cooperating with global laboratories and companies to jointly promote the innovative development of humanoid robot technology.

Xu Bin, general manager of the National Land Center, said that after the completion of the training ground project, it will effectively reduce the investment cost in the development of embodied intelligent technology and solve the problem of duplicate infrastructure construction. Through the subsequent mature operation and national promotion of the training ground, it is expected to be built into a national virtual and real combined embodied intelligent technology development platform, promote the development of new quality productivity of my country's humanoid robot industry, and provide strong impetus for the cultivation of national strategic emerging industries and future industries.
