APC or IFV

It may be difficult to get the point across in an english language environment since mech inf is still called infantry. Which isn't the case here, since, by design I guess, they're not ment to be infantry.

Proper infantry, even todays motorized infantry that bounds to Boxer motherships, is supposed to be able to fight classic infantry operations for prolonged times. Which requires organic capacity to provide suppressive fires. A dismounted LMG / MMG, DMR etc.

Panzergrenadiere ride along the tanks in their IFVs and normally "only" dislodge opposing infantry in a quicker fashion from certain positions were these can endanger friendly mech vehicles. Direct fire support can then come from the IFV that is normally somewhere nearby. That personall can then be spared, maybe.
Then again, a standard inf squad in the Bw is, I think, larger than 9.

That more relates to the doctrine of the military service in question. Doctrine is the play book of the service. Its how the Army thinks.
Now doctrine has to bow to capabilities to a degree but generally you match doctrine and capacity.

In the case of the US Army post 2000 they moved to the Brigade Combat Team concept which uses a common set of ideas including the size of the Rifle squad 9 men. For comparison the USMC uses a 11 man rifle squad, and lacks a true IFV using instead LAV25 with 6 scouts.

The concept of the Bradley was probably based on a similar doctrine to how you are describing the German Army's use of Maurader or Puma with a smaller more specialized squad. But doctrine changed. The vehicles couldn't. Well actually they did but only a small amount. When Bradley was first introduced it only carried 6 passengers (same as a Puma) seated face out with weapon firing ports by the gulf war they started changing the interior layout and the seats moved the ports plated over and a new seat was added.
Generally in operations infantry attached to heavy brigade combat teams are meant yes to support the vehicles. But they also have the ability to operate as general infantry if needed.

This is what I have been talking about on this forum for about a year now. I big caliber infantry support vehicle that can also take on IFV and cause damage to tanks.

ATOM: Russia Rolls Out Killer Armored Vehicle

Russia’s tracked vehicle manufacturer UralVagonzavod is preparing to unveil a heavy armored wheeled vehicle, which is being as eagerly awaited as Russia’s all-new Armata tank.

Originally designed as part a collaboration effort with France’s Renault Trucks Defense Company, the ATOM heavy Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) was to become the pinnacle of modern-day technology and a prime example of mutually-rewarding cooperation between Russian and European manufacturers.

After Renault Trucks Defense suspended its participation in the joint project, UralVagonzavod decided to go it alone producing one of the best armored vehicles money can buy.

The ATOM represents the plant’s first entry into the wheeled armored vehicle market, reflecting the company’s strategy in strengthening its traditional tracked vehicle production base with wheeled vehicle platforms, for which demand is stable (unlike tracked vehicles).

As a heavy vehicle platform, ATOM will be able to adapt to a number of applications, all based on a common chassis.

These include troop carriers, command vehicles, combat electronic vehicle, combat engineering and recovery, and fire support platforms, mounting various weapon systems, from the 57mm cannon to the 120mm gun-mortar.

The ATOM 8x8 IFV features an overhead unmanned turret armed with a 57mm automatic gun, which is capable of engaging light armored and soft targets with a firing rate of 300 rounds per minute and an effective firing range of up to six kilometers.

It is powered by a 600hp diesel engine, which features an automatic gearbox and transmission with independent suspension. The IFV is propelled in water by a pair of propellers fitted on the sides of the rear hull.

It has a maximum speed of 100km/h and an unrefueled range of 750km, with a ground clearance of 600mm and features run-flat tires. The vehicle can be air dropped using Il-76 aircraft.

The ATOM features an all-welded hull with modular armor plates. Its cabin accommodates three crew members and up to eight troops along with equipment. It has one rear ramp, and four roof hatches for entry and exit.

The IFV is designed to provide transportation for motorized infantry subdivisions during combat missions and in battlegrounds.

The vehicle can be customized to make it suitable for deployment in different operations. It is available in different variants including troop transport vehicle, ambulance, breakdown vehicle, and armored police vehicle.

The combat weight of the vehicle is 32 tons and the maximum payload carrying capacity is 7 tons.

The ATOM IFV will be presented at the Russian Arms Expo (RAE) exhibition to be held at Nizhny Tagil on September 9-12.

Russia’s newest combat vehicle able to destroy drones and helicopters — developer
The Atom advanced infantry combat vehicle has up to five levels of ballistic protection, a WMD protection system and an active protection and laser warning system

STARATEL FIRING RANGE /Sverdlovsk Region/, September 9. /TASS/. Russia’s Atom advanced infantry combat vehicle developed by Russia’s Uralvagonzavod research and production corporation will be able to eliminate lightly-armored targets, as well as drones and helicopters, according to a booklet released at the Russia Arms Expo 2015 international arms show that is opening in Nizhny Tagil in the Urals on Wednesday.

"The combat module with a 57mm automatic gun allows the Atom vehicle crew to detect and eliminate lightly-armored and soft-skinned targets, as well as air targets [drones and helicopters] easily," the booklet reads.

The combat vehicle is also capable of destroying aircraft at a distance of up to 6 km.

The Atom has up to five levels of ballistic protection, a WMD protection system and an active protection and laser warning system.

The Atom’s engine power is 600 hp and its road speed is up to 100 km per hour.

The Atom infantry combat vehicle has been co-developed by the Russian Burevestnik Central Research Institute, a subsidiary of Uralvagonzavod, and the French company Renault Trucks Defense.

Photo report from the military exhibition for the Minister of Defense of Russia. After the final of Tank biathlon on August 15th 2015 the Ministers were invited to visit a very interesting exhibition in Park Patriot made especially for them. Notice the subtle differences in the copulas.
