I'd need to finish my Ph.D. Can't really afford it at the moment.

I mean yes, that's the whole point. The people polled aren't reacting to some objective economic situation. They are reacting emotionally according to their political bias.

You're probably right lol. But don't worry, I don't think of you guys as plebs. For what it's worth I don't believe things are written in stone. I can certainly see scenarios where Trump is quite good for the American economy.

That I actually agree with. Trump is obsessed with the performance of U.S. stock market and will take any measure to make sure that it goes up. I actually started moving from cash to investments in anticipation of this.

One data point is not statistically significant.

Here, I'll translate the central message of the highly rated answer which I posted as a screenshot that aligns with your core message. I'm being completely honest, you'll have so much more fun there.
People's perception of the economy and the actual economic situation are two completely different things. Propaganda lies can create feelings but not facts even if repeated for hundreds of years. No matter how many times you repeat what you see the sun rise in the east and set in the west, it cannot change the fact that it is actually caused by the rotation of the earth itself. No matter how bad the American people think the economy is, it cannot change that all data show that the US economy in 2024 is very healthy.

That's a really funny passage actually lol.

Im pretty sad about the EV incentive possibly being on the chopping block. But I'm hopping since Musk has Trump's ear, that they will cook up some kind of deal to make Teslas cheap for everyone.

I recall reading on this forum you have some personal relations to ex-USSR states. I just had to translate the third screenshot I posted earlier of some of the answers you'll find on that forum.

The speaker was giving a report on the achievements of the Five-Year Plan: a new power station was built in Leningrad. Someone in the hall said: "I just came back from there, there was no power station there." The speaker did not answer, and continued: "A chemical plant has been built in Stalingrad." Someone in the hall said: "I was there a week ago, there was no chemical plant there." Speaker: "Comrades, you'd better stop wandering around and read more newspapers! For example, Pravda!"
The context is this Chinese version Soviet Union joke has the same underlying message as the previous core passage posted by someone who you would identify with.

I should learn Chinese just for the memes and the wit. Chinese people are really funny. One of the funniest jokes I've heard translated to me, was when I was watching the 2020 Worlds Championship in League of Legends. There was a joke about the toplaner 369. The jokes was that he's called 369 because his performance is like a dice roll, sometimes its a 3, or a 6, or if you're lucky a 9.

Honest advice, most practical reason to learn Chinese is for shits and giggles, you're missing out on so much funny stuff. The abundance of Homophones in Chinese and the (self) censorship creates unimaginable hilarity, translations will never do any justice.

Trump often uses grandiose threats as negotiation leverage (see SK President Yoon

even before Trump is inaugurated, just on the prospect of blanket tariff threat). So it's effective, against US allies and protectorates. Just that intimidation tactic doesn't work on countries like China.

A blanket tariff of 20% would really spike inflation and hurt US GDP growth in short-term, and alienate Europe and East Asian US allies. So instead, he will likely enact 5-10% blanket tariffs, and additional 20-25% tariffs on China, then call it a day. So he fulfills his campaign promise, just not at the level that he promised during the campaign trail, which would be economically suicidal.
