The platform store ban is not a big deal. You can just go to the website and download TikTok. Takes 5 minutes.
Alternative app stores (there are many) let you update, especially on Android. Apple is also opening its ecosystem to third-party downloads.
Finally, some Android apps - e.g. WeChat - now update themselves. So you don't need Google Play to update TikTok.
Seeing his/her mental acrobatics might be a sight to behold.Should I let SleepyStudent out of the cage so we can ask him for an explanation or should I wait a few more months till everyone is out of a job?
IMO, China would or should not let a sale. It will hurt western back investors, american jobs, and also show in a small part to the american population that their government is also "authoritarian"We will find out soon. US congress is so bipartisan on anti-China bills that pretty anything with China on it will pass. Allowing Biden ability to Ban Chinese Apps is pretty much certain to pass. Whether Tik tok is banned or not ofcourse is still not certain as Tik tok could potentially be sold by Bytedance rather than getting banned. They tried to do exactly that when Trump tried to ban it. Thankfully Trump lost the election.
But the way Tiktok spying rhetoric is going in the US media, it is pretty much certain they will be either banned from US or potentially from all of app stores, or they will be forcefully sold by Bytedance to prevent such bans. One thing is for certain, no Chinese social media app will ever be allowed to be successful in the US.
Yes, the way to go is to keep forcing them to turn up the heat and worsen their living standards in their home. The cold war is a siege, and every time China surpasses America in a certain tech sector, the American regime will be faced with the choice of allowing China to profit passively off rent provided from said products, or ban their citizens from using it, which will only exacerbarate their backwardness.IMO, China would or should not let a sale. It will hurt western back investors, american jobs, and also show in a small part to the american population that their government is also "authoritarian"
Didn't China already block the Tiktok sale back during the trump presidency by putting the recommendation algorithm under export controls? Technically they can still sell Tiktok the platform and service minus the recommendation algorithm but then it will just be another crappy short video feed like youtube shorts or instagram reels. IMHO, China should just call the US politician's bluff. Let them ban it and deal with the backlash from Gen Z and Millenials (bye bye Democrat voting base) and watch them workaround it or if they find the cost too high they can let it remain with conditions like data localization, protection, etc. Just like people in China can use FB, twitter, IG, etc even though they are technically "banned" the same will happen to a TikTok ban in the US. You would basically have to turn yourself into North Korea (the irony) to stamp it out. At this point Bytedance/China hold most if not all the cards in this scenario.IMO, China would or should not let a sale. It will hurt western back investors, american jobs, and also show in a small part to the american population that their government is also "authoritarian"
