US Navy aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman has departed the Mediterranean Sea after three months of operations and is currently working with the French Air Force in The Atlantic Ocean.

From July 2 to 6, embarked aircraft from Carrier Air Wing One (CVW-1) are conducting integrated flight operations with French Naval Aviation aircraft as part of French Air Defense week.

The purpose of the exercise is to increase readiness and demonstrate the ability to operate together by practicing air warfare and strike techniques, to include dissimilar air combat training.

“France is our oldest ally and a vital partner in ensuring security and stability in the region and across the globe,” said Commander, Carrier Strike Group 8, Rear Adm. Gene Black. “The opportunity to integrate with French Naval Aviation helps us enhance our interoperability as we work to achieve common objectives.”

CVW-1 aircraft participating in the exercise will include F/A-18s and E-2D Hawkeyes, which will integrate with French Dassault Rafale M Fighters.

Throughout the duration of the exercise flight operations are being conducted over France and French territorial and international waters in the Bay of Biscay.

According to a USNI News report, the Harry S. Truman carrier strike group will continue its deployment in the Atlantic Ocean in what is seen as a response to the Russian submarine activity in the North Atlantic. Also noted in the report was a 2017 “detour” of aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush who attended the UK-hosted drill Saxon Warrior after a deployment to the US 5th Fleet area of operations.

The two-week exercise took place in waters north of Scotland from August 1, 2017.

New Brazilian Navy video about their new toy; they seem quite proud!
Well, they are proud.

But what does it buy them, really?

Some air assault, and potential amphibious assault.

But they do not have much to protect her.

Are the 30mm cannons the only armament left? What do they have to protect her from any type of anti-shipping missile?

The Ocean was not built to the normal, rigorous military specifs and standards so they may be facing quite bit of maintenance on an increasing basis.

Oh well...in terms of raw power projection it does not replace their carrier...but then their carrier was getting very long on the tooth and they simply could not afford, in the end, to modernize her.

I believe plans to buy a small carrier from France is either on hold or off. Anyone know?

A lot of people are very derogatory about HMS Ocean/PHM Atlantico because of her controversial origin, she was after all built for the same price as a Frigate and a lot of corners were cut to achieve this. A lot of remedial work has been done in the past twenty years of her service life too, so faults reported in her early life really are ancient history. Only four years ago she had a major mid life refit that extended her operational life far beyond the nominal 'twenty years' often quoted.

She gives a renewed focus to the Brazilian Navy after the failure of Sao Paolo, and perhaps they have shifted their expectations to participation in international operations where contributing an LPH/Marines and a few escorts might be more useful than trying to 'double up' on an American Carrier (which they could not hope to do realistically). Long term plans by the Brazilians to build a pair of their own carriers may be helped by this ship, as they keep the aspirations alive for another generation, and they may even be able to build an enlarged variant themselves as the construction was as mentioned kept simple. The hull design is based on the Invincible class simplified from GT power to commercial diesels. QECs are Diesel powered with a couple of GTs added for speed when needed. And they have the type 997 Artisan 3D radar thrown in (probably with a view to further sales for their escorts). She has been sold without the Phalanx guns (we are a bit short of them (the Government is a bit tight on this), but that opens up the opportunity to fit their own choice of CIWS or even SAM (SEA RAM?).
