HMS Queen Elizabeth's commander has said in its Twitter answering event a while ago that carrying LCVP landing crafts in the boat bays is being considered for the future; a study is underway (or has finished, the wording in the reports does not make it too clear) on how to organize and paint the deck of QE to provide 10 spots for simultaneous helicopter operations (up from an initial design of 6 very large spots. There are, anyway, 12 deck positions serviced to serve as aircraft / helicopter operation positions). ...

twelve?? isn't that more than on a USN supercarrier?

Helicopters...I believe as far as a US CVN is concerned the most helos deployed along with fixed wing aircraft was 19. I believe that was aboard CVN-72 a few years back. I do not have time ti check it right now.. I'm on Iowa's dime....:p

What does that mean: "aircraft / helicopter operation position"?

That would be an on deck tie-down, for light maintenance/preflight servicing, you should be able to launch or recover helicopters from these positions very rapidly as well a quick combat ops turnaround, so fuel would likely be available at several of these spots, maybe all????

On this day in 1945 The Japanese surrendered, marking the end of the Second World War. The Fleet Air Arm now consisted of 59 carriers, 3,700 aircraft and more than 72,000 officers and men. Of these carriers, 34 were operational in the Far East on VJ Day. Image: Flypast by RN carrier aircraft over HMS Duke of York.
