The Russian carrier is probably only carrying 12 SU-33s and maybe four SU-25s.
That is the maximum number of aircraft the carrier ever had on board - the climax of Russian carrier aviation. And 350 sorties within several month is a lot - for Russian means.

I'm not sure if the refit of the Admiral Kuznetsov will happen atleast not in the short term. That article from 2010 says that it will happen in 2012 its now 2014 and no word of its fixed start date yet. And the article also talks about nuclear power plants and steam cats on its angled deck makes me question the credibility of that article further. The ship already has two major refits in 1997/98 and in 2006. The ship today seems to be well maintained and well runned as the Russian Navy now have some money. Although the ship and its systems looks archaic compared to modern carriers and to her sister ship the Liaoning. But it is certain that the Admiral Kuznetsov in the coming years will recieve the Mig-29K and the SU-33's and the SU25's will be phased out.

But we will have to wait and see what happens this summer.

So you can spend your entire naval career as a shopkeeper ? I know that on board most USN ships there is some kind of ship store even on a Arleigh Burke class DDG. I heard that the Nimitz class carriers has two of these ship stores.

Ship store on the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70)

Ship store on the USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77)

Lieutenant General
That is nothing..very weak. The CVW on a Nimitz class can do that many sorties in two days if need be.

At the halfway point of her last deployment, approximately four months..These are the statistics rolled up by HST CVN-75;

Seven thousand sorties in 4 months...No brag..just fact.

Damn...lol...mighty harsh expression of facts there Master Chief! Killing our Russian readers Naval pride with one response.:p

When a US nuclear carrier deploys, on the ship itself there are over 5,500 people.

That's a lot of people. A small city. And they all, outside of when general quarters have been called, have time off while they are on the carrier. They do their personal hygene. They eat snackes. The read books. They listen to music. etc., etc. all the things that any normal people do.

So yes, there is a good sized store on the carrier. People have to work in that store to sell stuff, keep the shelves stocked, operate the registers, clean up messes, etc., etc. So, there are personnel specialities for that. And if you spend several years on carriers...you will spend a lot of time doing that, and rising in the ranks within that specialty I am sure.

May sound strange...but in the Navy it takes store keepers, plumbers, cooks, firemen, adminstrative types, etc., etc. to run a huge vessel like that...in addition to the mechanics, electricains, electronic techs, aircraft maintenance, armament techs, fuel techs, fire control techs, radar/sensor technicains, pilots, etc. to fight her.

On the French Military News Thread, Asif and I were discussing the total numbers of large, full flat-deck aviation/amphib vessels in the world.

If you list them, nt including the LPD vessels, but including all of the immediate build plans (ships currently building) you get the following::

US Navy - 21 total
10 Nimitz, 1 Ford, 8 Wasp, 1 Tarawa, 1 America

Japan - 7 total
2 Izumo, 2 Hyuga, 3 Osumi

Italy - 5 total
1 Cavour, 1 Garibaldi, 3 San Giorgio

France - 4 total
1 De Gaulle, 3 - Mistral

UK - 3 Total
2 QE, 1 Ocean

Russia - 3 total
1 Kuznetsov, 2 - Vladivostock

India - 2 total
1 Vikramaditya, 1 Vikrant

Australia - 2 total
2 Canberra

China - 1 total
1 Liaoning

Brazil - 1 total
1 Sao Paulo

Spain - 1 total
1 Juan Carlos

South Korea - 1 total
1 Dokdo

Thailand - 1 total
1 Naruebet

Thats a lot. A total of fifty-two large, flat deck aviation/amphibious warships.

Ten years or so ago, the US had more than all of the other nations in the world combined. Not any more.

This is why, even in peace, the deck of an aircraft carrier is one of the most dangerous places on earth.

This is going back a ways...but a riveting video just the same.

It's a C-2, that had VIP aboard as I understand it. Get's interesting a about 1:20 into the video.

Watch the guys get to the wheel, and I believe tie it down, while the prop is still turning, and the foam is spraying over them. Gutsy, dedicated sailors.
