Now THAT is an excellent picture, with the Italian Cavour and Horizon in the background and the Italian Type 212, the Salvatore Todaro (S526) in the foreground.

Great find. Thanks.

However, in practical terms, rarely would such a diesel/electric sub be used as an escort for a carrier group for any deployment or operations out into the blue water.

They just do not have the speed or the endurance to do so.

With a 20 knot max speed submerged (and very short duration when operating that way) and only 12 knot surfaced, they simply could not keep up for any deployment or action on the high seas.

Very nice picture and very modern looking navy I like the Italian navy ships
Yes, like the UK (and also the French) the future Italian fleet is going to consist of very modern and very capable vessels...IMHO, just too few of them.

Basically, once they get to the modernized numbers, the UK, France, and Italy are all going to end up with one or two carriers, 2-6 destroyers, and 10-13 frigates, depending on which one you look at.

Now the UK and France will also have their SSNs.

But taken all together you end up with four carriers, ten destroyers, and thirty-three frigates for all three of those historically very powerful maritime nations combined.

A model of the old 25 de Mayo with full complement of aircraft. Since its dismantlement it is now in millions of kitchens around the world in the form of pots and pans.

Jeff and Popeye. I know you model aficionados will get a thrill from this. Jeff you need a moterized model of this for one of your local lakes.
