Finally India gets what they have waited and paid for for so long

The escort is no where near to what China showed off just days ago but two flat tops there that's a achievement

It's getting busy, Queen Elizabeth is next
The Vikramaditya had a Talwar Frigate, the Trikand, F51, and the Delhi destroyer, D61 escorting her. The two shown in this photo are the Talwar Teg, F45, and the Mumbai, D62 DDG, no doubt escorting the Viraat. So there are at least another FFG and another DDG there with them and not shown.

It could be more. I hope the Indians produce photos of the entire task force. They would be smart to do so.

At the very least they have two carriers, two Talwar FFGs (commissioned in 2012 and 2013 respectively) and two Delhi DDGs (commissioned in 1997 and 2001 respectively) with them.

It would be neat to see all six of those vessels with their Akula II class SSN escorting them.

Doesn't Italy also have 2 fixed wing aircraft carriers ? The Giuseppe Garibaldi and the Cavour.

Never the less very nice to see and i hope we get to see the Indian shake down of the Vikramaditya. Lets hope that the Indian media will get the same access to the Vikramaditya as the Chinese media has with the Liaoning.
By golly you are correct. I had thought they had decommissioned the Garibaldi, but that was the Spanish Asturias. So yes, the Italians could put together two fixed wing carriers too.

But I believe at this point that they only have 8 AV-8B aircraft in total. They are waiting for the F-35B.

Great catch, Franklin, thanks! I will correct my earlier post.

Did the aircraft carrier take on fuel from any tanker(s) while on the way?

INS Deepak (A50) escorted her all the way from Murmansk. So I'd guess they had several RAS moments.

Tanker INS Deepak was the only ship to visit Lisbon (December 16-18, 2013) and most probably she took oil there.

Gosh the Viraat sure looks antiquated next to the vikramditya, which says a lot given the latter itself looks like a late soviet era STOBAR.

Impressive picture though, not many navies can put together two flattops let alone flattops with fixed wing planes, regardless of the actual airwing size on each ship.

Now they just need a decent escort fleet. Doesn't even have to be USN standard or like what the PLAN put together for their SCS jaunt, they just need one destroyer with a VLS long range SAM and PAR, and a frigate or two with VLS medium range SAM... No self respecting CSG should allow itself to be defended by only shtil.

Also note the ski jumps, Vikram is longer and not so steep whereas the ski jump from the Viraat is abrupt and short

Well, the Kolkatas are coming, but right now, the SA-N-12 (shtil) is what they have for what we would call mid-range (45km) defense. Not a bad missile, but launching from single arm launchers is their weakness. But nine of them together as they have in this group, could still put up a lot of defensive missiles if necessary. And they are backed up by 32 VLS Barak I missiles on each Delhi, and SA-16s on the Talwars. So, that being said, they have a pretty decent escort group. From friends in India I have learned that the escort group for the two groups consists of the following vessels and will be exercising together for several days:

Vikramaditya Group:
1 x CV INS Vikramaditya R33
1 x DDG INS Delhi D61 (Delhi Class)
1 x FFG INS Trikand F51 (Talwar Class)
1 X AOR INS Deepak A50 (Deepack Class)

Viraat Group:
1 X CVL INS Viraat R22
1 x DDG INS Mumbai D62 (Delhi Class)
1 x DDG INS Mysore D60 (Delhi Class)
1 x FFG INS Trishul F43 (Talwar Class)
1 X FFG INS Tig F45 (Talwar Class)

That's two carriers, three destroyers, three frigates, and one AOR vessel. Nine Indian naval vessels altogether. I would not be surprised to learn later that the INS Chakra is there too...that's the Akula II Class SSN that the Indians got from the Russians in 2011. I do hope they publish pictures of the entire combined fleet together.
