Newport News (Va.) Shipbuilding will flood Dry Dock 12 on Friday, Oct. 11, to float the USS Greald R. Ford aircraft carrier. Susan Ford Bales, daughter of the ship’s namesake and its sponsor, will tour the dry dock with media before flooding begins.

The ship will be christened on Nov. 9. Bales will break a bottle of sparkling wine over the ship’s bow. The hull will be released from dry dock, and set afloat.

The ship is 1,106-feet long. The earliest it will be commissioned is 2015.

With a nuclear power plant to cover power needs, it has an estimated cost of $12.3 billion.

It will be able to carry up to 90 aircraft and launch up to 220 sorties a day.
