I wish they had taken more time on the hanger deck. it looks cavernous from the little you saw of it.

He said that they had over 40,000 tons in place. That means well less than 20,000 tons left to go for her launching and the light load. He indicated they would be finished with the structure this year for a launch next year. When they lift that aft, second Island, you will know that they are very close.

Here's a great video from the UK's Aircraft Carrier Alliance that depicts and explains what the Royal Navy's Carrier Strike Groups are going to look like once the HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales aircraft carriers are commissioned and in service.

The will consist of :

1 x Queen Elizabeth Class carrier (CV)
2 x Daring Class (Type 45) guided-missile detroyers (DDG)
2 x Duke Class (Tye 23) guided-missile frigates (FFG)
1 x Asutute Class nuclear attack submarine (SSN)
1 x Tide Class Replishment Fleet Tankers (AOR)


These will be very powerful and very capable strike groups with new, world-class vessels in each category. Ultimtely, the Type 23 Duke class will be replaced by the new Type 26 Global Combat Ship frigates beginning in 2021.

Ooops...yes. Dang fat fumble fingers. Simple transposition. I fixed it in my original.

Looks like comfort will be a big thing on QE carriers which is very good to sea

The whole thinking behind the QE carriers and their air complements was decided with integration and dual use with the USN which is why they went for the F35

The sortie rates were decided with what would be required from the RN for a work alone of work alongside a super carrier which in turn dictated the size and tonnage of the carrier, it was thought 48 aircraft would be the need which means a carrier of 65,000 tons

These two carriers will bring the USN and RN to a integration level never before seen and you can say they can be seen as the 12th and 13th carries of both USN and RN

Not to take anything away from RN, they are two carriers which will fulfil UK foreign policy but if and when the need arises and they do need to work with the Americans they will fit together like a jigsaw puzzle

Which is why we have so much cross decking and joint excercises between he two navy's years before either QE joins active service

It's a long training run up for the UK so by the time the Queen Elizabeth is commissioned all the skills will be sharpe

You can see how seriously UK has taken carriers, they never abandoned the concept of having air power from shores far away

Final flight deck section at the rear has been added and only one island remains which is ready to be shipped to Rosyth and fitted in the coming months, it's ready to be put on a barge next week and shipped up north, barge should reach Rosyth in middle of June

The carrier has now taken almost full shape, just the aft island remains

Yep, the Queen Elizabeth now has a full flight deck. Here's a few pics after the last seciton was lifted on May 22.


Can't wait to see that aft island lifted into place...and then see her properly launched. It will be a great day for the UK.

1st JMSDF 22DDH Carrier Construction Porgress

Here are five recent construction images of the 1st in class JMSDF, 22DDH aircraft Carrier, DDH-183.

The first is from March 2013 and shows the hull complete and the flight deck nearing completion with. The next two, show the island progressing, and the last two show the island almost structurally complete. These are from May 2013 to the start of June 2013.

It is coming along very nicely and due to launch in 2014 to my understanding.
