not only that, US was concerned about UK role and responsibility in NATO and as a result now US will help Royal Navy to use "surge" tatics, which means UK will now train to send both aircraft out at the same time and be able to deploy to a war zone 2 aircraft carriers with full airwing, essentially, 2 carrier battle groups

In my opinion as I've previously stated.. USMC Harriers or F-35Bs should deploy aboard these ships if need be. The USMC in 2007 did deploy shortly aboard Illustrious.

Boat rams aircraft carrier INS Viraat near Cochin port

Kochi, Nov 19: A boat operated by the Kerala State Water Transport Department (KSWTD) collided with the aircraft carrier INS Viraat near the Cochin Port yesterday.

A major tragedy was averted when a passenger boat from Fort Kochi, carrying around 160 people, rammed into INS Viraat anchored in the coastal waters, here on Sunday evening.

According to the passengers who were aboard the boat of the Kerala State Water Transport Department (KSWTD), the accident occurred when the crew members lost control of the boat.

“The German cruise ship ‘Celebrity Solstice’ which was stationed at the area was about to start its journey. The waves that erupted when the propellers were set in motion caused the boat to sway, leading to the accident,” a passenger said.

The police officials said that, the passenger boat was caught between INS Viraat and the cruise ship, which was a potentially dangerous situation. The incident took place around 3.15 pm.

The passengers alleged that the accident occured owing to the carelessness of the boat’s crew members.

“The presence of the ship had been reported to the crew. Though the fishermen also sounded an alarm, the crew members failed to pay heed. This is utter negligence on their part,” said Nison, a passenger. He added that the boat was already carrying more passengers than the permissible capacity of 100.

Meanwhile, the passengers have raised complaints that there were no life jackets available on the boat.

“We started panicking when the boat hit INS Viraat. Shockingly, there were only 10 life jackets available for nearly 160 people,” said Karin Sabir, a native of Kozhikode.

Refuting the passengers’ charge, KSWTD Superintendent Joseph Xavier said that sufficient number of life jackets were available on the boat.

“We also had spare life jackets,” he told ‘Express’. Strict action will be taken against the driver of the boat if the alleged negligence is found to be true, he said. “An initial inquiry has been completed. We have been informed that the driver was unaware of the presence of the cruise ship in the area.

The driver has alleged that the cruise ship failed to sound a siren prior to starting its journey,” he said. Most of the passengers aboard the A89 circular boat which was bound for Ernakulam boat jetty were not from the district. No casualties have been reported in the incident.

Two passengers have lodged a complaint regarding the matter with the Central Police station.

The USN is sending the IKE home for the Persian Gulf early to get it's flight deck re-surfaced. This will take two months and then IKE will be sent back to the Gulf region. Now that's different!!. And the Nimitz was scheduled to replace her has to re-enter the shipyard at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard Bremerton WA for some emergency work on her propulsion system..

The Nimitz was scheduled to deploy in January to relieve the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, but that will be put off until summer in order to complete repairs to its propulsion system.

I think the IKE's flight deck is being re-surfaced to allow her to remain deployed a longer period of time... back in the day small portions of the flight deck were re-surfaced during the cruise.

Here's the official US Navy version of this subject..

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The Navy has directed the temporary return of the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower(CVN 69) from her current overseas deployment, allowing the ship to return home for two months before sending it back to the Middle East region.

The unusual move is being made to accommodate delays due to emergent repair work on USS Nimitz (CVN 68). The Everett, Wash.-based carrier was expected to deploy to the region to relieve Eisenhower early next year. Nimitz is now expected to deploy once repair work is complete.

Bringing Eisenhower back home to its homeport in Norfolk, Va. in December will permit the Navy to resurface the ship's flight deck and make it available to return and remain in the Middle East region for several more months. This decision also provides the ship's crew a welcome holiday respite from what will become nearly 10 months on station.

"Our Navy is in high demand operating forward all over the world," said Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jonathan Greenert. "And our Sailors, civilians and their families are doing a great job meeting that demand. Expanded maintenance work on USS Nimitz was unpredictable and has required us to establish a carrier schedule that satisfies our commitments overseas and most importantly is mindful of the stress on our Navy family. This is the right thing to do."

The John C. Stennis Carrier Strike Group, currently deployed to the region, will continue providing carrier presence in the CENTCOM Area of Responsibility. Stennis departed its homeport of Bremerton in August.

That's an excellent cut-away.. Don't let the lower enlisted of the USN get a gander of the berthing aboard a Type 45 DDG or the QE CVF..they'd go bonkers. berthing aboard USN ships for lower enlisted is primitive as compared to most other modern naval ship of the World. sad but true!

Yes, in the Harrier pilots deployment on the Lusty, they really appreciated the nicer appointments and hated to leave, bd why do the QEs have two islands?

Obi Wan knows why.. I think one is for the Ships navigation and the other for the flight deck.

Advantages of the two island configuration on the Royal Navy carriers

Instead of a traditional single island, a current ship design has two smaller islands. The forward island is for ship control functions and the aft (FLYCO) island is for flying control.

Advantages of the two island configuration are increased flight deck area, reduced air turbulence over the flight deck and increased flexibility of space allocation in the lower decks. The flight control centre in the aft island is in the optimum position for control of the critical aircraft approach and deck landings.

News flash.. two islands eats up more deck space not less. Just my opinion.

Hehehe...lol! I had exactly the same reaction when I read that sentence.

The New ForD Class Island is pretty small itself, and set further aft...I do not believe it is much bigger than either one of those QE islands.

I admit there is a certain good look to it...but that second Island is sitting square in an area either between or just fore of an elevator where at least two aircraft could park.
