This is strange.. th ship is new. Perhaps they are tweaking some flaw in the design.

As for the "lifts".. that must be an Indian design. I've never seen that before. Maybe it's done to protect the aircraft and personnel against a heavy sea state.(big waves)

Hmmm...then why don't the USN - or in fact anyone else - adopt such design? The Indian Ocean can get some serious seas state during the cyclone season but that's fair game for just about every navy that operates flat tops and have large oceans to patrol...

First hand information coming up.. The USN does not operate the aircraft elevators in certain sea states. It's not safe.

The advantage with "open" lifts is obviously space: you get extra space because you can have some parts (like tails) of the airplanes stick out

As a matter of fact it looks like no plane would fit on the elevators if they were "sealled off". At least on CdeG.

On the other hand, Tejas (as seen on the model) are a lot smaller than Hawkeyes...

^^6 excellent points navyreco! My little brain forgot about that..jeez.

If the USN operated a Goshawk as an Light attack aircraft I think they would fit on the elevator without protruding over the side..if need be..

Then somebody at their design bureau forgot planes don't do yoga contortion...y'know, for all the foreign aid and guidance the Indian gets this shouldn't be something they'd do, unless their vision is that for the ship's service lifespan it'd be navalised Tejas for its fixed wing asset and helicopters of various types for all other roles and purposes.

But that's stupid, right? Who'd cook up something like that and get it approved?

Could it be that not only the elevator can be moved, but the splash guard as well? See, the Indians are increasingly competing with us, the Germans (who have one of the best crazy ideas departement of engineering) in engineering, so I would credit them with enough intelligence to not create such an obvious constructive failure.
