The equipment onboard of the Russian carrier seems to be kinda dated, many of the controls are the old types of analog meters and dials, while current first line PLAN boats have electronics and more automated - not sure if such also applies to the ex-Varyag though...

I was aware of it...but not the details. I believe it is a good opportunity for export by the French for any nation wanting a somewhat smaller and cheaper conventionally powered CATOBAR carrier. Three props, two cats, two elevators...something on the order of 50K displacement, 40+ aircraft.

What I was not aware of was that Brazil is seriously looking at two new carriers. If they go there, they will significantly upgrade their historical carrier capabilities.

It will be interesting who all actually responds to their request. I can certainly see France doing so. I expect S. Korea and Spain will do so...Spain has already had some success with the Australian purchase. I doubt Japan will, and I am not sure whether the US will, though I think it would be good for the US to help build a dedicated Sea Control carrier like the new America, but with an angled deck and cats and traps.

And notice after all this time the Russians still haven't gotten that deck crew thing correct. No color coded jerseys for deck handling tasks!

....And they don't have non-skid on the deck.

It is also my understanding that the RUN cannot do major repairs such as an aircraft engine change on the ADM'K'.

During launch the Russians use that strange deck pop-up hold back chock system to allow the Su-33 to build up thrust. Is there any word on the Chinese using the same system on their carrier?

Wow! Seems like the US Navy system is the time tested and experience tested carrier operations system. You can cut corners at your own risk. I wonder if their LSO system with their guys in that little shelter off the deck works better than having the LSOs standing on the deck?

NORTH ARABIAN SEA (Jan. 18, 2010) Weight board operator Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Equipment) Airman Recruit Matthew Baxter shows the weight board to watch standers inside the Integrated Catapult Control Station, or the bubble, during flight operations aboard the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68). LSOs & LSEs will never go out of style!

LSO=Landing Signal Officer (fixed wing aircraft)
LSE=Landing Signal Enlisted (helos)

No I mean that bubble type arrangement the Russians use for their LSOs near the back of their carrier. That's what I was referring to. I will post a picture if you need a reference

Please post! Thanks!

And I doubt if it works better..the Russians can barely complete 40 sorties over a two week at sea period. By comparison the USN completes 140-160 sorties daily..'nuff said.

You can see a little bit at the end of that Adm "K" video posted by Popeye. I think that's what you were referring to?
