Just to let everyone know, HMS Invincible will be towed out of Portsmouth Harbour on Thursday 24th. Exact time to be announced by the Harbour master nearer the time. In case anyone wants to see her off on her final voyage to Turkey.

France aircraft carrier Charles De Gaulle leaves the harbour of Toulon, south of France, Sunday, March 20, 2010. Top officials from the United States, Europe and the Arab world have launched immediate military action to protect civilians as Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's forces attacked the heart of the country's rebel uprising.

sad indeed! I have the honor of actually been inside this ship when I was in middle school back in the mid 80's! I remember being very fascinated by the hydraulic elevator/lift system of all things!

The old lady could do with a lick of paint ( she isn't so very old, isn't she ).

Not really. She looks fine to this old salt. just sitting inport near the ocean can cause that surface corrosion. It really picks up when the ship is at sea for extended times.. It is no matter as long as it is treated properly.

I don't know about the FN but the USN constantly paints it's ships when they are inport.

Painting the ship is a good past time, as well as useful. In Nelson's time it was holystoning the deck.
Army practice was said to be: If it moves salute it, if it doesn't paint it.
