Here's Visakhapatnam, the first indigenously designed & built Project 15 Bravo destroyer. The hull will be launched Monday.

The Indian Navy put out this brochure on the P15 Bravo line today, which provides the first official parameters of the vessel.

but they are a bit on the light side in both number and range compared to the air defence ships of most other modern navies.

MBDA -DRDO MAITRI - 40 km or Astra VLS of 25 km
or both.

as for the the Maitri which was given the go ahead recently could be of 40-50 km range
since MBDA is proposing it to be the akash mk2 .
he akash mk2 was supposed to have a range of 60 km.
if the DRDO accepts the MBDA offer ,they can get a three layer missle defence

but if DRDO doesn't accept it the indian navy will be stuck with 2 SRSAM's
astra -25km
and MAITRI-15 km (in its present config. maitri is 15 km,a derivative of the Mica AtoA missile)
but maitri in its present config. is already tested,nd MBD has promised it in 3 years.

you have got the ATAS wrong, its not BEL Nagin

its going to be Atlas Elektronik ATAS

On November 12, without announcement or fanfare, the ministry of defence (MoD) signed a small contract with enormous implications for itself and the Indian Navy. This formalised the purchase of six advanced towed array sonar (ATAS) systems from Atlas Elektronik, the German naval systems giant, for just under Euro 40 million (Rs 306 crore).

....................So important is the ATAS contract that the MoD abandoned even the pretence of indigenisation. Atlas Elektronik will build all six ATAS systems in Germany, and has been exempted from offsets................

..............With this contract, Atlas Elektronik has taken pole position for supplying the navy a range of high-end sonars. Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL), which is required to build ten ATAS with foreign partnership, has been encouraged by the navy to tie up with Atlas so that sonar equipment is standardised across warships.

..................BEL is learnt to be in discussions with Atlas for building ten ATAS for three Shivalik-class frigates (INS Shivalik, Satpura and Sahyadri), three Kolkata-class destroyers (Kolkata, Kochi and Chennai), and four Kamorta-class anti-submarine corvettes (INS Kamorta, Kadmatt, Kiltan and Kavaratti)..........................

ATAS import has been blocked since the mid-1990s because the Defence R&D Organisation (DRDO) was developing an indigenous ATAS called Nagan. In 2012, the Nagan project was officially shut down and work began on another system called ALTAS. With this making slow progress, the DRDO finally okayed import.

In November 2012, two years ago, Atlas was declared the lowest bidder. That was followed by a string of complaints to the MoD against Atlas, apparently motivated, since the MoD found no wrongdoing. Even so, with the ministry painstakingly investigating every complaint, each caused a 3-4 month delay. Earlier this year, with the elections impending, the United Progressive Alliance decided to leave the signing to the next government. Atlas Elektronik is owned 51 per cent by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann GmbH (KMW) and 49 per cent by Airbus Defence & Space....................................

Hmmm, based on that "official" picture, it looks like the Project 15B will still have only 32 Barak-8 VLS tubes. That's still too few IMHO for a vessel of this displacement and capability.

I had though they were increasing the number.

It could be limited by the hull itself and how the Indians have configured the internals of the ship. We don't have a clear picture of what is exactly going on under the deck, structurally. I agree though that in the role of IAMD for Fleet, it is lacking in VLS cells and could do with a more substantial LRSAM as well (Barak 8-ER perhaps).

I expect IN is examining prospective new Hull designs for a future build.

Well, originally they talked about 64 AAW cells, and there is talk in India about a retrofit to the Kolkatas to get them up to that number (which would mean that the room exists, or can be made).

The Project 15B though was supposed to have it.

I guess we shall see.

I know that they do plan a Barak 8-ER for the Project 15B vessels.

Both of those projects have lower range than Barak-8 though, and unless they can quad pack those missiles into the Barak 8 VLS they won't be increasing the number of missiles either.

Unless you're suggesting the Indian Navy is going to consider adding more VLS into the hull..

I had though they were increasing the number.

It looks like they've only changed the main gun to a bigger calibre and changed the geometry of the bridge superstructure... Everything else looks almost the same from P15A

WASHINGTON — Development work for the new Flight III Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, scheduled for 2019, is on track, a key US Navy admiral said Monday.

"We know we need more power, we know we need more cooling," Rear Adm. John Hill, program executive officer of integrated warfare systems for the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), told an audience at the Navy League's annual Sea Air Space exposition. "But that is where [NAVSEA] is focused."

The Flight III ships will be fitted with the new Air Missile Defense Radar (AMDR), under development by Raytheon. The new sensor will replace SPY-1D radars fitted in earlier versions of the ships.

The first Flight III ship is scheduled to be the second of two destroyers to be funded in 2016.

"By all accounts we're on track. Everything's looking good for this destroyer," Hill declared.

"When we get this ship to sea it will be the most powerful warship on the planet."
