No, it was a joke REGARDING censorship. While I don't think Chinese censorship is as bad as some may think in the "West", it would be hard to convince me that it doesn't exist.

That said, apologies for derailing the topic. Continue on about Chairman Mao, gentlemen!

Mao would have gotten into the pages of history along with people like Mohandas Gandhi or Nelson Mandella if he really retired in 1958, at the time things were going well for China, the economy was booming, the party was still democratic. Mao would be remembered as the national hero who liberated Chinese people from the feudalistic nationalist regime and foreign imperialist. But he got addicted to power and screwed everything up.
 
The party was democratic? The economy was booming? How so? Weren't the first few years of Mao's regime marked by the hunting of capitalists and dissidents?

==That started in the early sixties. In the fifites, the Chinese economy was partially liberalised, and only 60% of government ministers were communist party members.
