It's hubris, you can hear it whenever Hegseth speaks. Trump's regime is full of the worst form of American negative stereotypes, they're like walking caricatures. When Hegseth and that General start their usual press conference, I find myself beginning to watch to get any new information or updates then reflexively putting the tv on mute soon after they start talking, preferring to catch cliffnotes later. I don't know how some folks can be so damn unlikeable with zero redeeming qualities between all of them.
Place the whole-ass HQ of an entire numbered fleet right at the doorstep of the enemy with substantially-sized and capable tactical missile and drone arsenals - All while NOT having the necessary capabilities to credibly defend the HQ against such threats (let alone keeping them functional beyond skeleton crew-level of capability) - Sounds really stupid if not downright incompetent.
Speaking of which, there is also one other USN numbered fleet's HQ which is located abroad and within proximity of the opposing side's homeland, i.e. 7th Fleet at Yokosuka. And if the blaze of Operation AR reaches the Japanese home soil, the treatments that the 7th Fleet HQ can expect to face will make what has happened to the 5th Fleet HQ mere child's play.
The war is going the way anybody with a functioning brain thought it would go; an absolute disaster for the US (so far). They parked their fleet at the doorstep of the enemy because they thought if they started bombing Iran they would just tuck tail and give up. They envisioned another Venezuela and boy were they wrong and why? Hubris.
