If Deino's publications are all from open source, including Weibo, I don't see any problem. On the other hand if he did get insider information from classified sources, Chinese authority would be very interested to know who are the ones giving out insider info.

Thus we cannot discount the possiblity of him getting an invitation to tea or coffee, but he won't be arrested as long as his gathering of PLAAF serial numbers, brigades and airbases are done outside China which is outside China's jurisdiction or in open avenue in various airshows like Zhuhai and Changchun. Though those leakers from inside China will have different stories.

In the real world there is only one life, no restart or load from last save option is available. People can say "it's safe" and all that, but with past precedent as it is, better safe than sorry.

Nobody ever cared about Pinkov visiting China and taking photos are Zhuhai Air show.

Thanks for all your comments and in fact to get a journalist status isn't an issue as it wasn't one last time in 2018 (if I would be accredited by my publisher!) but having a journalist status did not save Minnie Chan unless the reasons for her disappearance are others.

But I think it is now too late to start planing, booking and most of all I need to work.

she is a Chinese woman. You are a white guy with German citizenship. There is a huge difference here.

Nah the best way to approach it is to recognize that this hobby has a slight aspect of risk (not that the idea of Deino visiting Zhuhai will pose any risk to him), but to still continue doing it anyway.

I would also add that all of us who are interested in PLA watching and have been doing this for multiple years probably are already on a list somewhere and should probably make peace with the likelihood (albeit infinitesimally small) that we (and/or families, friends) could be a target of one op or another at some point in the future by one nation's representatives or another.

Cause really, if you're a proper PLA watcher you probably have considered the possibility at least once, that your hobby might get yourself and your extended family disappeared to a alphabet soup blacksite for a few decades, and made peace that you're a bit too deep in and nothing is removable from the internet.

So why not live it up?

(I kid of course. But only a bit)
