I personally really hope Deino can visit the Zhuhai Airshow this year. It will surely stir up excitement in half of China's military enthusiast community! Just imagine if Shi Lao and his team organize a live broadcast with Deino at the airshow, how interesting that would be! As for the safety and entry-exit issues, I don't think Deino's past controversial actions have violated any Chinese laws, so there's no worry about him being 'invited for tea' by the security or law enforcement authorities.

Indeed, everything at the ZH Airshow is above board, and in the unlikely event you are invited for a nice little chat you can always just give away all your contact, they care a lot more about the source than what is essentially an open source clearing house; if it isn't you there'd be some other PLA enthusiast in the West happy to take 'em.

Why ever worry about a tea chat? I can't think of any gloomy consequences, seriously. In the worst case, you will become world famous which will last an eternity. You will be immortalized in Wikipedia, Flight, WSJ, Bloomberg, FP, etc. And then you can write a book. Think of how much you will make!

I think it's probably a great time to visit China. And yes it could be that new aircraft will be displayed.

I wouldn't worry too much about the Chinese internet security rules. Just make sure you act as the guest you are. Are you concerned about the internet security rules in the West given what happened with Julian Assange?

Exactly. The US is the country with a track record of arresting people for what they post on the internet, not China. Just look at the treatment toward Tiktok these days. They even ask for your social media comments when you apply for an American Visa on the Ds160 lol.
China is more likely to treat Deino like an influencer who promote tourism to Zhuhai, it's only us fans on the internet who joke about arresting him, because then we can treat him to dinner at Zhuhai's seafood market. I'd definitely make time for Zhuhai this year if Deino goes.

Thanks for all your comments and in fact to get a journalist status isn't an issue as it wasn't one last time in 2018 (if I would be accredited by my publisher!) but having a journalist status did not save Minnie Chan unless the reasons for her disappearance are others.

But I think it is now too late to start planing, booking and most of all I need to work.

As a public information collector and analyst, you are safe in China. Minnie or someone else should be have other reasons.

Minnie was probably connected to below the board sources who may have something else going on. I think so long as your sourcing is open and not “insider” you’ll be fine.

I would also add that all of us who are interested in PLA watching and have been doing this for multiple years probably are already on a list somewhere and should probably make peace with the likelihood (albeit infinitesimally small) that we (and/or families, friends) could be a target of one op or another at some point in the future by one nation's representatives or another.

Cause really, if you're a proper PLA watcher you probably have considered the possibility at least once, that your hobby might get yourself and your extended family disappeared to a alphabet soup blacksite for a few decades, and made peace that you're a bit too deep in and nothing is removable from the internet.

So why not live it up?

(I kid of course. But only a bit)
