I have to say I have become to really like Su Yiming, he belongs to a new generation of Chinese kids.
Check out this video. Su Yiming and Eileen Gu have known each other since they were 14/15. They were cool to hang out together. Su Yiming acted in movies, but decided to focus on skiing first. He speaks very fluent English (watch some of his interviews with foreign reporters) and likes surfing too.
So yes Eileen Gu owes her success in skiing to the US upbrings and there is no question that the US has a much better training environment in skiing and snowboarding etc. but who says you can not be successful even in today's China. Su Yiming is entirely an indigenous Chinese product.
Have to say that an increasingly wealthy China and more Chinese middle class families can afford and provide the opportunities for their kids to participate in the more expensive sports and hobbies. Su Yiming had been groomed by his family. He is not a product of the state sports training system when he started his skiing. It was his pure love and talent for the sport, and his family support.
